[edit] Merge

The same place has articles under Sanskrit & Pali names. I suggest the Sanskrit name be used, based on a higher google hit count. Sylvain1972 19:21, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Disagree. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the name used by UESCO should be the primary name while other names can be redirected to that page.-Arman Aziz 04:57, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
It's not appropriate to remove a merge tag unilaterally. I've restored it. Second, UNESCO used the Sanskrit "Somapura" on their websites: [1], [2].Sylvain1972 13:32, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Furthermore, "Somapura Mahavira" is the title used by Encyclopædia Britannica. Sylvain1972 13:56, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Sylvain1972, I'd love to work with you on these articles. I have no issue to go with the merger tag for the time; but more important than tagging is actually doing the work needed here. So, I'm proposing to do the following as soon as possible - we combine all three articles in a new one called: "Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur" - the exact name used by UNESCO, and redirect all of the following titles to that article:

  • Somapura
  • Somapura Mahavira
  • Sompur Bihara
  • Paharpur.

In the introduction of the article, let's clearly mention that the historical name of the site is "Somapura Mahavira" and add further details on the in the body of the article. And I suggest you write that part of the article.

Let's try to make this a "Good Article" together.

Is this a good plan?-Arman Aziz 01:24, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Is there anything significant about Paharpur other than Somapura? If so, I would suggest keeping the Paharpur article separate and merging the rest under "Somapura Mahavira," following the Encyclopædia Britannica convention. If not, I would suggest that we use "Somapura Vihara at Paharpur." Sylvain1972 15:52, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I have just merged all the articles involved (Somapura, Paharpur and Sompur Bihara) into this article, including the talk page. All the previous articles are now redirected to this page. Any quick google search or a peek into the Banglapedia (the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh) will tell that this is the correct title for the archaeological site. Cheers. Thanks. Somapura Mahavihara is probably the best choice. Arman Aziz 02:41, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
