[edit] South African Timeline
Hi Chris, I need some help, some users want to vote off the Timeline of South African history from wikipedia. Please vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Timeline of South African history. Thank you --Jcw69 20:30, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your vote, the nomination for deletion has been withdrawn. --Jcw69 12:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Rondebosch
Hmm, I'll try not to get too upset about Bishops boys making edits to the Rondebosch page ;-) Previously you removed the word prestigious from the opening paragraph. I noticed that Bishops is also called prestigious in its opening paragraph. I don't think this is inaccurate in either case, but so far no Rondebosch old boys have removed it from the Bishops page claiming that it's unencyclopedic... can I put it back please? [edit] Please logon to IM
Hi Chris please would you logon to Jabber, MSN or GTalk - I would like to discuss the Diocesan_College infobox - thanks --Kilps 20:57, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
I have changed the infobox slightly so that the translation of the latin motto is there, but I think some more stuff should change - will start discussing in the Talk Page, but please still go online --Kilps 21:03, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hermanus
Thanks, you are welcome. It's just a pity we never really saw any whale whenever we have been there. A picture with a whale (instead of just whale watchers) would have been even nicer. Optimale Gu 06:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] South African politician stub
Hi Chris
It is my experience that almost every case when a politician-stub template uses any other image than a national flag, some editors will feel either offended or feel that the image does not adequately represent all aspects of the politician spectrum. In the case of South Africa, it is a further complication that the stub is also used on politicians from the Boer Republics etc. It seems that the only fool-proof way to ensure neutrality will be to rely solely on national flags for this purpose. Just my two cents. If you think it is necessary, feel free to revert the template to the last version using the flag. Best regards. Valentinian (talk) 15:20, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

I saw that you informed the creator of PHP on Trax that he shouldn't remove deletion tags, if you hadn't have done that then the page may have slipped through the cracks. Just to say again: Thank You! MichaelBillington 10:50, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Mark Walters
Chris, why is my removing of untrue, unverifiable material from an article determined to be unhelpfull, and the replacing of it with true, verified material isn't?
- This issue has been resolved, and the vandal warned. Check User talk:59.3.87.102 for the reply. -- Chris Lester talk 13:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

- Chris, the article is subject to an organised campaign of vandalism from a message board which is hostile to Celtic FC. They are also vandalising the Neil Lennon and the Andy Goram pages! You have to be a member to see the message board, so if you wish, I shall post up the relevant threads?

[edit] Featured Articles
Hi Chris,
I figured that I should send you a friendly message directly about this issue — I can be quite combatitive on FAC, so please don't take this personally. It is quite normal for an article to become too large and to be split off into daughter articles, and that daughter article to become a featured article. I have done this before with Windows 2000 and Architecture of Windows 2000, and also did this with Btrieve when I split off Architecture of Btrieve into a daughter article. Basically I've done the same thing with USA PATRIOT Act, Title III, Subtitle B (and in fact I have already got USA PATRIOT Act, Title III, Subtitle A to FA status). The main thing about FAs are that they be detailed and comprehensive within the article's scope (defined by its very article title). The basic principal is that if an article is valid on Wikipedia (i.e. it won't be in danger of being deleted) then it should be possible to write it in such a way that it becomes a featured article.
Ta bu shi da yu 13:19, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Please don't use the main page as a criteria for opposing an FA status of an article, as this is not actionable it will be ignored by the FA director. - Ta bu shi da yu 22:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Of course, there are no real penalties for making an unactionable objection (apart from doing it to just be deliberately disruptive). If you want to keep it at object that would be fine also, however without being more specific and making an actionable objection your objection will be ignored, that's all. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:22, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] cul de sac page
it wasn't vandalism, cul actually means "ass" in french and it said "literally means" so i made the translation literal.

It's not a joke and if you were to look up the word cul you'll see that colloquially it's used to mean butt/ass so a literal translation of the phrase "cul du sac" would mean butt of the bag. The translation of "blind alley" isn't a literal translation, it's more loose and conveys the proper meaning of the term. I was simply trying to add a little bit of french trivia into the entry. Whether it is inappropriate or not is up to you, but it isn't wrong. I apologize if my last message sounded impolite I was simply explaining that it was not meant at an attempt at vandalism. I do however agree with your "blind alley" translation as the right translation. I just thought it'd be interesting to point out that the phrase in french can be taken literally to mean ass/butt of bag.

[edit] Haikona spam
Thanks for the note; I wasn't keeping a close enough eye on my watchlist, so those slipped through. This guy seems to be quite tenacious; I've asked, reverted and warned him/her on a number of occasions now. If this keeps up, I will try lodging a complaint with his ISP, or see if we can get the domain added to the wikipedia blacklist. Let's see what happens... dewet|✉ 19:50, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My Thanks
I wanted to drop a brief note on your talk page (one admittedly not written to you only, but nevertheless truly meant) to thank you for your vote in my Request for Adminship, which concluded this evening. Even though it was unsuccessful, it did make clear to me some areas in which I can improve my contributions to Wikipedia, both in terms of the areas in which I can participate and the manner in which I can participate. I do plan on, at some point in the future (although, I think, not the near future), attempting the process again, and I hope you will consider participating in that voting process as well. If you wish in the future to offer any constructive criticism to me, or if I may assist you with anything, I hope you will not hesitate to contact me. Thanks again. — WCityMike (T | C) ⇓ plz reply HERE (why?) ⇓ 04:29, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Universities of technology
I'm not Páll, but I can answer your question about Universities of Technology. It is true that the old technikons could only award diplomas. However, now that they are universities they can in fact award degrees - in particular, the BTech degree. In fact, they go right up to doctoral degrees. See, for example, CPUT's hierarchy of qualifications. - htonl 21:49, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bishops pupil-teacher ratio
Hello
I have been trying to find an accurate pupil-teacher ratio.
There are about 98 teachers (excluding admin staff) [1] and 750 pupils which would make a ratio of 1:7.65 -- which sounds a little low. Anyway I can't find an official figure anywhere with a citation. --Raker 15:57, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hey
How are you doing ?
[edit] South Africa
Hi Chris, Which school i will be attending has yet to be finalised but i do know that it will be located somewhere in suburban Cape Town. I do have a few questions that i hope you can answer for me, many people (expat South Africans) say that most schools are incredibly strict especially those with a strong Afrikaner influence, is this true? Whilst in SA it will be illegal for me to drive (even though i have a NZ drivers license) is it wise to take public transport? And finally are English South Africans similar to New Zealanders and Australians in culture etc...(my host family are English South Africans)
Thanks for your help, i really look foward to going to SA. Arguss 01:29, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ar li ki ba ba
Hi there, back to our friendly rivalry over the Rondebosch Boys' School page ;-) Thanks for taking an interest in it, but I do think some sentences stand out as being added by a Bishops boy each time you've been through it! You're also very strict on vaguely positive comments like "known for sporting achievements", compared to the extremely glowing opening paragraphs on the Bishops page which you haven't applied the same standard to. Not saying you should, just suggesting you might give RBHS a break... Zaian 08:32, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Chris, if you want to add anything about the UCT Mathematics Competition, I created a stub page for it. For the RBHS page, I counted the years that RBHS won the competition, and included 2006, which isn't on the website yet. I'm not sure if the winning streak goes back further than 1999, when the list on the website starts. Yes, I was a RBHS, although I hope it doesn't stand out in what I wrote about the school! I don't mind if you return the page to stub status - it's not a very good article yet, even though it's longer than the normal stub. I also have mild reservations about listing dozens of Springbok rugby players (yawn), but it's something that boys-only schools in SA seem to find important, so I suppose it should stay. [edit] RE: User:86.130.23.220
Hi. As far as I can see, this IP hasn't vandalised since my last warning. Am I missing something? (perhaps they created an article that was deleted?) I'll keep an eye on them. Cheers TigerShark 12:09, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I did see that one, but it was made during the same minute that I gave the final warning - so I have to assume that the warning wasn't seen until after the edit was made. Anyway, they seem to have stopped now, but I will keep an eye on them. Cheers TigerShark 12:16, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
