[edit] New Delhi - The Original Music Capital of India
Who would have thought that the political hub of India would witness one of the strongest musical uprises in the country? A silent yet forceful undercurrent has passed through and an increasing number of music lovers, musicians and promoters are finding themselves at the forefront of a new wave.
We are observing more and more youngsters taking to professional performance stage, emerging out of the shadow of popular covers and creating their own original music. The city is eager and hungry to lap up true talent and is even discerning enough to trash the wannabes. Gone are the days when playing in bands raised eyebrows. The musicians and their promoters now want to take risks and venture beyond what is expected. It's not all about rock and roll baby!
Bearing testimony to this development is the first music festival in the city called Eastwind. It is slated to be the largest platform for original music in the country and will be held end of February. Eastwind is a brainchild of a Delhi based musician Adhiraj Mustafi, who has been promoting original music through various initiatives across the country.
It is not only the large events but also the smaller scale, regular events such as Jack Daniel's Annual Rock Awards by Riff which provide the city's music lovers a consistent interface with good music. The build-up gigs are high frequency and hosted at the popular pubs in NCR.
If you thought that was enough, there is also the Chivas Livealive festival which brings elite jazz music to the city at the same time. Large advertisers are happy to go with the tide as well. So is Bollywood. Saif Ali Khan is doing a four city tour with Parikrama. Of course the Great Indian Rock by RSJ is another musical frenzy which is also emphasizing on original music this year.
Delhi sees live action across the year. While five years ago one sought out a gig maybe once a fortnight, today the capital can offer a choice of upto five different gigs in the same evening!
Popular gig venues in the city are Cafe Morrison, Haze, Lodi Garden Restaurant, Opus, Cafe Chinese & Thai.
