[edit] Images

Hi there, seeing that you're an administrator and Arsenal fan, I have a question for you. What happens when someone uploads an image to commons, but it is not used for a Wikipedia article? Does the image warrant deletion? I ask because all the "extra" Gilberto images uploaded by GilbertoSilvaFan are being tagged for deletion. Thanks. Chensiyuan 06:21, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, there is no reason for the Gilberto images to be speedily deleted. They are free to use, which means they don't need to be deleted. Most of them are actually in use. The reason given for speedy deletion is This is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image. which is not accurate. I see no valid reason for speedy deletion.  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  09:33, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

I thought so too, why do you think that person tagged them for deletion??? What can be done about them... Chensiyuan 09:45, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Of course, I also forgot that if an image is stored on the commons, it's not necessary to store it on wikipedia. As an example, this image (chosen at random) has no image description page, because it is not wikipedia-hosted, it's only on the commons. Compare Image:Gilberto against Villa.jpg with Commons Image:Gilberto_against_Villa.jpg. Both display the same image URL. Therefore, a speedy deletion on a wikipedia image that is stored on the commons will delete only the description page.  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  10:46, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
PS. I feel very hungry after seeing the images on your user page.
Thanks for the clarification... regarding the food pics, well they are supposed to! Chensiyuan 10:53, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Derry City F.C.

Hey there. Would you have any interest in contributing a suggestion or adding your support to the nomination of Derry City F.C. for featured article status? Cheers. Danny InvincibleTalk|Edits 03:30, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Featured topic?

Given that the Arsenal and Gilberto Silva articles are FAs, and the Thierry Henry and Fabregas ones GAs, do you think there's a legitimate claim for featured topic? Chensiyuan 21:02, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

It had never occurred to me before, but it sounds like possibility. Looking at Wikipedia:Featured topic criteria, it seems that there are a couple of big obstacles:

  • 5. There is no obvious gap (missing or stub article) in the topic. when combined with:
  • 6. Each article is of high quality

..means that all the players need good articles. Furthermore, one of the 'Recommendations' is that: The topic is not overly large. There are currently 30 players listed in the squad, but I don't see why that is really a problem. It depends on the scope of the topic - do we want to include the articles listed on {{Arsenal F.C.}}? Finding enough information to make a good article for each of the younger players however, is going to very difficult - many are currently stub class. Perhaps we should bring it up at the Arsenal F.C. article. I think User:Qwghlm could be a good ally if we want to go for this, as he contributed much to Arsenal's FA status. I've never really tried to create an FA, except to help out GilbertoSilvaFan with a few questions, so I may not be the most useful editor for such a challenge, but I'll help.  Sʟυмgυм • т  c  18:11, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in the Football AID vote.

Football club names has been selected as the new collaboration. Please do help in working to improve it.

[edit] Grays Athletic Players

Talk started at User talk:Jimbo online#Grays Athletic F.C. squad

I have been updating and adding such relevant players. All the new articles I created are deemed as relevant to Grays Athletic, as I would not have added them. Hence why I have not created articles for Moses Fakolade, Freddy Tandon, Luke Woodward, Danny Baigent or Ashley Barnes.

Thank you for your concern. Jimbo_online 00:45, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tagging of Template:Infobox Football All-Ireland 2

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Template:Infobox Football All-Ireland 2. I do not think that Template:Infobox Football All-Ireland 2 fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because redundancy is not a reason to speedy delete a template. It can be a reson to nominate at WP:TfD, but soemtimes the discussion there will decide on a redirect or other non-deletion solution. Sometimes there ar reasons for keeping two diffretn tempaltes that at first seem redundant. so i suggest raising the matter there.. I request that you consider not re-tagging Template:Infobox Football All-Ireland 2 for speedy deletion without discussing the matter on the appropriate talk page. DES (talk) 20:05, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Much the same reasoning applies to Template:Infobox Hurling All-Ireland 2. DES (talk) 20:06, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I did not place the tag on either template. Please look again carefully.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 20:07, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

My apologies, i misread the history. I will copy these msgs to the proper user. Thanks for lettign me know of my error. DES (talk) 20:10, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bravo Zulu

I have just restored this page which was incorrectly deleted. The alleged copyvio is a public domain U.S. government website (and one which unusually is actually explicit about the public domain nature of its material - see its Privacy Policy, point 2.) I would like to note, as an aside, that, although listed first, I was not the original author of that page - the early history has been lost during software upgrages. Rmhermen 18:26, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for bringing this to my attention.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 18:30, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Flag of the Soviet Union

Please, read the article Flag of the Soviet Union before you revert my changes next time. 1923 version of the flag was used only until 1955 or was replaced even earlier. Cmapm 23:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I did read it. The flag did not change in 1955, but in 1980. The info you added does not mention a change of flag at all, rather a ruling to ensure the correct manufacture of the flag, the general design of which was implemented from 1923 - 1980. The 1980 flag is a brighter red, and should not be added to articles concerning events before then.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 23:22, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

It did change, please read this from the 1955 description:"Sharp tip of the sickle lies in the center of the upper side of the square, handles of hammer and sickle rest in bottom corners of the square." I.e. tip of the sickle should be equidistant from tips of handles of the sickle and the hammer. Now look at 1923 version and then - at Image:Flag of the Soviet Union.svg. Cmapm 23:28, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I now agree that it did change, but it was not easy to work out. I have just made a small change to the article to clarify it and remove the contradiction below the 2nd pictured flag. I still think it's better to use the 1923 flag for events before 1980, as the colour change is more noticeable in flagicon form than the symbol change.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 14:41, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
I've uploaded 1955-1980 version: Image:Flag of the Soviet Union 1955.svg, but have no time to fix corresponding pages so far. Cmapm 18:37, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The 7 Day Theory

Why was 'The 7 Day Theory' Deleted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.12.222.44 (talkcontribs)

Well, I deleted The Seven Day Theory because it was a redirect to a non-existent article.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 14:59, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image licensing rationale

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Valenciennes.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Valenciennes.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigrTex 01:32, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Le_Mans_UC72.gif

I have tagged Image:Le_Mans_UC72.gif as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. BigrTex 01:56, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:FC_Lorient.gif

I have tagged Image:FC_Lorient.gif as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. Thank you. BigrTex 01:58, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shrewsbury Town - removal of reference

Just wanted to check on your reason for removing the reference from Shrewsbury Town F.C.. Was it because football squads aren't normally referenced due to them changing frequently, or because the referenced page became out of date and wasn't updated quickly enough? Just curious... cheers. --Jameboy 16:25, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

It was simply because the page was long out of date and inaccurate...for example, two players at #6, one called Lee Canoville, another called Lee Tanobille. Lee Canoville left in May. I think wikipedia could the only place where the squad list is remotely up to date or accurate!  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 16:30, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Transfers

I noticed you edited many French football squad templates today. However, using this edit as an example, you removed Guillaume Moullec yet left the {{FC Lorient squad}} on his page. Similar occured for many players over several templates. :(

I appreciate your efforts, but I thought I should mention this. Most French transfers do not create news in the English-language world, so any help from France is useful.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 19:13, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I've updated the templates, but not the player's page (I've forgotten, sorry...), but don't worry, the templates are correct, and I'm gonna update the player's articles as soon as I can (i.e. tonight or tomorrow). Thanks for your remark.--Latouffedisco 20:50, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:FA Cup Finals

Your edit to {{FA Cup Finals}} did work, but it requires all the articles to call the template between {{fb start}} and {{fb end}}. At the moment, none of the articles do that. You can either go back to your edit and convert all 126 articles or leave it as it is. I would favour the first option but it's more work.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 12:20, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Apologies for messing up the format like that, I'm a little peeved that I didn't realise that I'd made that mistake. I may be a 4th rate code monkey, but I should've worked that out, given my experience. And since I make edits in my copious free time, I'm up for editting all 126 articles, though it might not happen all in one sitting. Thanks for pointing that out, by the way. I was utterly at a loss as to why it had failed.

By the way, I first had the idea to edit that template when I was working on a different prototype. It looks a little odd to my mind, so I figured I'd ask someone such as yourself, with more practise in templates and what works on Wiki. I'm half-way through making another template for the FA Cup seasons, as opposed to just the Finals which are on the template you assisted me with. I don't intend to make the existing Cup Finals template superfluous, though if it reaches acceptance over time, that might happen (though I tend to have humble aspirations for my own creations, so I'm not even giving it thought). My template is more along the lines of the template for Premier League seasons, only with an added part in small text, a la Template:2006-07 in European Football (UEFA) for the finals (see the bottom line, "EUFA Competitions"). The problem is that we already have this template for the FA Cup Finals, and quite frankly 50% of the articles I would add to the template haven't been written - being every FA Cup season article before 2003. This might well make the template look stupid, it would certainly be covered in red links, and for such a lengthy template, that might be inexcusable. On the other hand, I tend to think "if this template continues to be used, will it be useful 10 years into the future?" and in my opinion, as more and more FA Cup season articles are written, it will be useful. Especially if we cut off all of the dead links, or go with my fall-back option, which is to just replace the red links with the Cup Final article for that year.

But as I said before, I bow to your much more impressive experience. What would you do in this circumstance? While I wait for your reply, I'll get on with adding {{fb start}}s and {{fb end}}s to stuff. Thanks for your time and help. Falastur2 12:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

With regards to FA Cup seasons articles, I would wait a while until a few more season articles are created. That way we can see if there is a demand for them or if people desire to create them. As a rule of thumb, I wouldn't really want to create a navigation template for mostly red links, so I would wait on 50% of the articles to be created. Category:FA Cup has 5 FA Cup seasons in it; 2 modern, 3 historical, so people are gradually making the older articles. btw, I actually created the FA Cup season article last year and many users contributed after that.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 13:07, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Fair point, and though I enjoy having templates which I can call my own, I was largely coming to agree with you. I'll start what articles I can and see what happens, though when I don't have resources to do so, I tend to rein back and decide that the articles are best left to those who do know. At the moment, as my contribution history shows, I tend to just add code to pages to make them look better, but I'll do what I can to add more articles. Thanks for the suggestion, anyhow. Falastur2 13:14, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Marlow

Re you edit to FA Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=FA_Cup&curid=11237&diff=141372897&oldid=141367640). What do you mean by "Marlow must have more"? Just out of interest. slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 13:53, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Only that as Marlow have entered all FA Cups except one, and have never won the trophy, they must have more losses than any other team (including Reading). - fchd 15:16, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Kilmarnock F.C. squad

Why did you remove the breaks? It looks horrible! lol seven+one 20:42, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Stuart Drummond

Noticed you moved the page from Stewart Drummond to Stuart Drummond (footballer) in April 2006. Do you have any definitive source for Drummond's first name? Some say Stuart, some say Stewart. I'm inclined to believe in Stewart (Sky Sports, Shropshire Star) more than Stuart (Soccerbase, premiumtv group) based on experiences with them in the past.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 17:30, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

I think you may be right. This and this would also suggest that Stewart is more commonly used. I must have assumed soccerbase to be accurate although, like yourself, I have since come accross many inaccuracies on their site. Forbsey 16:48, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I just heard the squad numbers for 2007-08 so I'll update the name as well.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 17:21, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Joey Barton article

I've been doing quite a lot of work on the article of Joey Barton recently and was hoping to get your professional opinion on it. Is it GA Class yet, or anywhere near GA and what do you think can be done to improve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sir-Nobby 10:26, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

I have sent it to be peer reviewed. Thanks for the help. Sir-Nobby 22:03, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of English Football managers

Hi, you put a suggestion on Talk:List of English Football League managers by date of appointment regarding date math. I've added to the talk page a different date math that I think would work well with that table - however, I'm rubbish at tables and would take me ages to get it completed and formatted well. Keep an eye on that page in case anyone else thinks its worth doing. Seedybob2 23:13, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jeff Winter

Hi. As you are a previous contributor to the above, could I ask for your input one way or the other, regarding a difference as to whether the subject is a freemason or not (as stated by the prime declared source MQ Magazine)? The editor claims to be the webmaster for Mr Winter's personal website, and claims also to have authorisation from him to remove the statement from the above article. The conversation regarding this subject has been carried out on my own talk page, but primarily on User talk:ComeOnBoro. I have also received private email from the user.

I have urged the editor to take this to the article talk page, but there seems to be some reluctance. Meanwhile, I have been reverting his edits until such time as this can be resolved. I don't mind which way this goes, but I will not see sourced content removed on an apparent whim.

If you do not have time for this, I will understand. Thanks. Ref (chew)(do) 00:25, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, an editor has carried out a WP:LEAD and WP:NPOV on the info, it has not been reverted so far, so I assume the disputor is happy enough. Time will tell. Thanks for your help. Ref (chew)(do) 10:06, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] James Milner Career section

Not really asking for full feedback on this article (although I wouldn’t mind it). I’d just like to know what you feel the best way the divide up the Career section is, by Club, by season, not at all or some other way. Please leave your reply under the section in my talk page named “Milner Career section”. Buc 16:31, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Match Article Template

Hi Slumgum. I am thinking of including a few match articles regarding Stirling Albion F.C. the reason I would like to include these as they are notable in the clubs history and scottish football history. I was just wanting to know if you have used your template on any other match aticles or was this one just a suggestion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Matches. If it is a template that is in use is it easy to use? Please reply to my talk page thanks Gorillamusic 22:31, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, I think I may have asked of this before, but this time round I'm seriously thinking of nominating Thierry Henry as a FAC. He's left Arsenal, but well. I'm really hoping for some feedback for his article. Thanks! Chensiyuan 15:55, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
