[edit] In progress
Just a quick note to say that I'm working on creating this template, based on the Images template in the French Wikipedia. It's my first WP template, so please have some patience. Rupert Clayton 00:26, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for starting this. Not sure whether you've visited the village pump recently, there was a discussion about need for such a template there. I also wanted to create it but found that you've already started! Anyways, if you need any help/suggestion do feel free to leave a note on my talkpage. I have a bit of experience of working with templates, which may be useful. Arman (Talk) 02:52, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm going to propose adding the necessary JavaScript functions at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals). I've replied to User:Armanaziz on this user's talk page. Rupert Clayton (talk) 17:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed at Village pump (proposals)
I have formally requested the necessary JavaScript functions at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Add a Slideshow template, based on existing functionality in French wikipedia. Anyone with suggestions or comments on this is welcome to join the discussion there. Thanks. Rupert Clayton (talk) 18:17, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Suspect you want a table
- Created and made a few usage improvements. (imho! <g>)
-
- Many thanks for moving the documentation, and for the fixes (I think, because I can't exactly tell what you've done!)
- See {{FixHTML}} and the wikipedia page it references about bunching... Experience with tested on seven browsers, and generations of IE browsers (Which tend to be the bad guy), the table solutions of that guideline work across platforms, whereas div and span solutions don't necessarily give the results on one of the others that you see whenever you wrote such HTML boxes in. Links in should guide you in proper category placements on the /doc page.
-
- You're probably right that this would solve the IE display issues, but I suspect my HTML familiarity isn't up to it. Mostly, I have just copied the template wholesale from the French version (the wonders of GFDL). As I have a stinking cold at the moment, I don't think I'm going to be able to pick up the details of how this works. If you think you could find some time to adjust the Slideshow implementation that would be great. It would be good to fix this and thereby keep up momentum on getting the Common.js functions added.
- Cat: Add to Category:Formatting templates for sure, and perhaps some others of the parent Wikipedia utility templates. (Sorry, just got a phone call, have to run!) Cat go on the /doc page. Kudos on a good job. // FrankB 19:54, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

- Added Category:Formatting templates and I'll browse for some others when my head stops hurting. Cheers! Rupert Clayton (talk) 01:05, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Template reluctantly reverted to div format
The original template as copied from fr:Template:Images uses divs for fomatting and references two JavaScript functions that interrogate these divs. It is possible that the template might work better using table formatting. However, that would require parallel restucturing of both the template HTML and the JavaScript code. Until we can persuade someone with the necessary skill and experience to do that, I have reverted this template to the version that uses divs. In theory, individual users should be able to get it to work for the moment by adding the functions to their monobook.js. You can see these functions at User:Rupert_Clayton/monobook.js. The table-based version (which may be a better long-term prospect for cross-browser functionality) is at User:Rupert Clayton/slideshow template (table format), so it's easy for people to refer to or recover from if needed.
