[edit] Company history
Set up in 1997 by Cate Markwell and a group of Sixth Form students. The tour gives students an idea of the pressures that go with working on a touring production as well as giving them an experience they will never forget.
Several former members of the company have gone on to become graduates in the industry with degrees in acting, direction and costume. Many come back to tour with the company to share their expertise. Most of the performers are aged 15- 18 and are studying AS / A2 Level Theatre Studies or GCSE Drama at the school. The company is run entirely by volunteers and the students take an active part in the running of the company and fund-raising for the tour.
[edit] The tour
Sixth Sense come together annually to learn the art of putting on a show, touring it to varied audiences and gaining experience of being “on the road”, and is particularly useful for students considering a career in professional theatre. The production is often one of the set texts from the A Level syllabus, although in recent years has been a Shakespearian play.
Any profits made by the performances go towards the next year’s tour. Over the last ten years they have performed all over the UK, in England, Scotland, and Guernsey in venues ranging from school halls to small theatres such as the Lochside Theatre in Castle Douglas and the Palace Theatre in Kilmarnock
The tour itself takes place in either July or August, and then the company performs at its home base in Downham Market in mid September.
In 2006, performances were held at Guernsey Grammar School, Les Beaucamps School, and an outdoor performance at Sausmarez Manor, as well as at Downham Market High School.
[edit] Influences
Sixth Sense productions have been highly influenced by the work of Physical theatre companies such as Complicite and DV8, and ideas from theatre practitioners such as Artaud, Grotowski and Brook.
[edit] Australia tour
In 2002 they performed A Midsummer Night's Dream in Melbourne, Australia, and returned this year with a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
