Sidhe (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sídhe is an early Irish word for ancient burial mounds or mythologically-significant hills found in the Celtic Nations. The modern Irish word for the mounds is síthe. In modern Scottish Gaelic the mounds are referred to as sìtheanan.

In Celtic mythology, the sídhe are believed to be inhabited by spirits known as the Aes Sídhe or Daoine Sídhe (modern Irish, Aos Sí) - terms that can be interpreted as either "The People of the Mounds" or "The People of Peace". In Scottish Gaelic these spirits are known as the Daoine-Sìth or, less commonly, Daoine Sìdh. Sometimes called by the English word fairies, or mistakenly shortened to simply "The Sidhe", the Aes Sídhe are variously believed to be ancient Celtic deities, ancestors, or spirits of nature.
