Talk:Shinwari
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I am not sure that Shinwari translates as "Simon". It does not resemble the Arabic translation of Simon, and a path via Arabic would be the only realistic way a Semitic name could have been incorporated into the Indo-Iranian Pashtun tribes. Even if we cite the radical sound changes which have modified other words of Arabic origin in Pashto, Shinwari would not follow any of the usual patterns. The word "shin" in Pashto means both "blue" and "green". It is often part of nicknames, eg. Shin Gul (Blue flower) (a masculine nickname). One can only guess at the origins of the word Shinwari, but tentatively it should be considered to have no roots other than those in the Pashto language.
