Shevchenko

Shevchenko (alternative spellings Schevchenko, Shevcenko, Szewczenko; Ukrainian: Шевченко) is a Ukrainian family name widely found in Ukraine, the former Soviet Union, and respective diasporas abroad. The name itself was derived from the Ukrainian word "shvets' ", meaning "shoemaker", and the suffix "-enko", so all the family name means "shoemaker's son" (however, "-enko" is only suffix without independent role, and English "son" translates as "syn" into Ukrainian).
