The animated series, Metalocalypse, primarily revolves around a fictional death metal, called Dethklok

In the Metalocalypse series, Dethklok is depicted as an extremely popular and successful death metal band, described by their adversaries, the Tribunal, as the "world's greatest cultural force." The band's fan base includes thousands of metal fanatics, who frequently endanger themselves to watch the band perform live.[1] With their widespread commercial success and lucrative sponsorship contracts, Dethklok is ranked as the world's twelfth largest economy.[1] Their global influence is so great, that the United Nations allows the band to act as their own police force, used to punish those who pirate their songs. When not touring, the band resides in "Mordhaus", a lavish mansion that also houses recording studios, a prison complex, high-tech research and development lab, vast library and various recreational areas. The estate and Dethklok are served and protected by several black-clad workers, who vow to give their lives for the band.

In reality, Dethklok

This success also enables all the band's members and workers to reside in a lavish mansion, known as Mordhaus. In addition to living quarters, the mansion contains recording studio, research and development labs, as well as a prison. The mansion is protected by Dethklok's workers, who pledge their lives to protect the Mordhaus. On seldom occasions the mansion is opened to the general public, such as "Fan Appreciation Day" from z. The band's traveling arrangements are equally lavish, including the "Murdercyle" (a motorcycle with four sidecars), an immense tour bus, and the "Hatredcopter" (a gargantuan, multi-level helicopter). The Hatredcopter is large enough to air lift Dethklok's entire stage to remote and inclement regions of the world.

Nathan Explosion (voiced by Brendon Small) is Dethklok’s lead singer and songwriter. He is known for deep and grave signing voice, which he even uses outside of music. Nathan, the son of Oscar and Rose Explosion, hails from New Port Richey, Florida. He attended, but did not complete high school, leading him to develop poor public speaking and literacy techniques. Despite his academic ineptitude, Nathan is Dethklok’s main songwriter; using murder, assorted acts of brutality, and hatred as staples in the band's lyrics. He also serves as the band's producer, though he eventually relinquishes the role to Dick "Magic Ears" Knubbler.

Skwisgaar Skwigelf (voiced by Brendon Small) is Dethklok's lead guitarist. A veteran guitarist, Skwisgaar is considered to be the world's fastest guitarist. He is almost always depicted either playing or practicing his guitar, a black Gibson Explorer, even whilst bathing and sleeping. Skwisgaar, a native of Sweden, is the son of Serveta Skwigelf, a former Miss Sweden. Her poor parenting skills and neglect are attributed to Skwisgaar's musical prowess and cold attitude.[1] He is also on the first member of Dethklok to obtain a lucrative sponsorship deal, and a pay-per-view guitar instructional video. Despite his musical success, Skwisgaar states that he is unable to read sheet music.

Toki Wartooth' (voiced by Tommy Blacha) is Dethklok's rhythm guitarist. Proclaimed to be the world's second fastest guitarist, Toki is known among is band mates to possess a child-like, innocent, and good-natured persona. He is the son of Anja and the Reverend Aslaug Wartooth, who reside in an abandoned village in Norway. Toki is often belittled by his fellow band mates, especially Skwisgaar, who often criticizes his playing technique, ideologies, and general naïveté.[2] Additionally, unlike other members of Dethklok, Toki states he has never played in another band before. His character draws additional comic appeal from his poor grasp of English, Norwegian accent, and frequent misconceptions of sexual innuendo.

Pickles (voiced by Brendon Small) is Dethklok's drummer. A native of Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Pickles originally begins his musical career as the guitarist and vocalist for a hair metal band called "Snakes 'n' Barrels". However, the band falls apart at the pinnacle of their success, after all of Pickles' band mates begin to cave into substance abuse. After an undisclosed amount of time, Pickles becomes Dethklok's drummer and percussionist. He also possesses "clean vocals", evidenced on The Dethalbum tracks "Hatredcopter" and "Kill You", which feature him signing. Pickles is the only known member of Dethklok to have at least one sibling. His brother, Seth, is an ex-convict, who appears in Dethfam and Dethwedding.

William Murderface (voiced by Tommy Blacha) is Dethklok's bassist. He is an enigmatic character, who derives comical appeal from his heavy lateral lisp, bizarre sayings, and spontaneous actions. Murderface reveals little about his past, other than the fact his father killed his mother with a chainsaw before turning it upon himself in a grisly murder-suicide. Following the untimely demise of his parents, Murderface is raised by his grandparents, and spends much his youth developing his skills as a bassist. While possessing the uncanny talent to play bass solos with his genitalia, his band members previously edited out his musical contributions on every album. Outside of music, Murderface enjoys collecting obscure historical memorabilia, including American Civil War shoes, the chair Abraham Lincoln was shot in, and the convertible John F. Kennedy rode in during his assassination.

All the members of Dethklok act somewhat sociopathic; if they are not directly responsible for the violence and mayhem that surrounds them, they are at least indifferent to it (with rare exceptions, such as their horrified reaction to seeing skin ripped off of living humans to make clothing in "Dethfashion," or Toki's reaction to Juliette Sarmansadandle's death in "Dethkids"). The band mates do appear to care about one another in the show, but have difficulty expressing their feelings, even when intoxicated. Although they vary in their levels of drug and alcohol consumption, they are all fond of drinking to excess. Dethklok readily admits that they despise their fans, whom Nathan refers to as "regular jack-offs."[4]

Another ongoing feature of the series is that the band members are incompetent at everything not related to sex, drugs, heavy metal, and negotiating their contracts, and at various points, they are ignorant of obvious things, like shopping for groceries and cooking, in episode one, "Curse of Dethklok"; or the most basic aspects of feeding children, as in episode ten, "Fatklok". Often, one member of the band will be unaware of a bit of common knowledge while another is not, prompting arguments or explanations. As a group, they also come up with ideas that are clearly quite asinine, harmful or even fatal, yet do not recognize this fact. One example is in their "time travel face bag" which is simply a plastic bag worn over the head that allows a person to travel through time at the speed of regular time: in essence, just a plastic bag.[5] Musically, all of the members of Dethklok are extremely competent, with Skwisgaar labeled as "the fastest guitarist in the world" and Toki as the second fastest, and, although the bass line is mixed out of almost every metal song that Dethklok plays, Murderface is shown to be adept at playing bass guitar, even with his penis. Both Nathan and Pickles seem to have very specific knowledge about other bands, as displayed in episode 13,"Go Forth and Die".[6] Metalocalypse.
