Talk:Shadowbane
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So, what needs to be done to this article? Well, descriptions of some of the races/classes would be nice, and exactly how does Shadowbane handle PvP? FrozenPurpleCube 01:06, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
dont even bother, this game sucks so bad noone is gonna come to this page. i checked out the game during freeplay and it is not worth writing about.
- I have to say, the game is one of the better mmo's I have played. It is unfortunate that he technology is as old as it is, however the game itself is increadibly fun if you play it for a while. I will admit that it takes a while to get used to, but once you rework the interface (the defualt version is rather clunky, but it can be customized more then any game I have ever played) it is great. It has kept my interest longer then any of the other MMO's, and i have played alot of them. If you want to try it, do it, it is worth a try. Aerken
Well I did - and I found it useful. Still, maybe some more critical review would be nice. Aaron 04:46, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes, something does need to be added. Maybe when I have some time I'll go into it.
Umm, this game isn't free, there's a trial, but it's only for 15 days... Mikey
- Yes, it is. The game was made entirely free. See: http://chronicle.ubi.com/newspost.php?id=15088 FrozenPurpleCube 02:49, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
yes this game is 100% free, including the game and its expansions. About the article, I think a Gameplay/Interface section describing how to move, cast, etc would be greatly informative, especially considering that this game has a notably different interface than most mmorpgs. It is closer to diablo in this regard that to most other mmorpgs.
Only chronicles of strife is free. The others are not (they are 15 day trials). I think a map needs to be added and the story of the game. There are so many information lacking in this page. This includes: disciplines, starting traits and char. developmentAWP_Lizard
A map, is iffy, since that's usually copyrighted, but it could be acceptable as a screenshot. The rest is fine, if you know it, add it(though it is important to avoid making this article a guide to the game), however, copying and pasting material from another website is not acceptable. That is a violation of copyright and as such, had to be deleted. FrozenPurpleCube 04:10, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
The page needs some info on what the game actually plays like. Do I just click on monsters and watch them die? Group tactics and missions? What?
Actually a map is not reasonable, since each world map is different depending on the server. User:LizardPariah
I fixed some parts of this article and I've posted more information the Shadowbane's gameplay and world maps. (I only posted the two most popular ones. I can post all if there's a request).--LizardPariah 07:07, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Added information on loreservers and information about transportation through runegates.--Nyimen 12:02, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- Located a map that might be usable for the vorringa map, unable to locate copyright holder though. Vorringa Map[1], If unable to be used, would use of a screenshot for the ingame map be an infringement? --Nyimen 12:02, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- I found a suitable map located on another wiki specifical created for the game called Morloch's wiki[2]. The picture of the map is quite large and appears to be adirect copy from ingame by a player him or herself, here[3] is the link to the picture for reference, I shall place it and a descripition on the page.--Nyimen 13:18, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
- Due to the difficulty with finding enough information to truely validate the Vorringa map I have made a screenshot of the map, uploaded it via the wikipedia uploader and used this on the page, this does not infringe copy rights as I have made the screenshot myself.--Nyimen 13:45, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Added to class and race descriptions, also added names of the maps and included links to the relevant pages of wikipedia, added a new link to a shadowbane wiki setup by a community and a link to the ubisoft site.--Nyimen 14:03, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Revenue?
One thing that I think would greatly improve the article would be a small mention regarding how the company makes money. I didn't see anything about this when I looked at the game's site (it was a very quick look, though). When I saw that the game was being offered for free, this was one of my first questions, and for the sake of curiosity this is something I'd like to know. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.201.3.17 (talk) 23:39, 21 March 2007 (UTC).
- Good point. I'll edit that into the article itself when I nail down the information, but I can answer here as well. Shadowbane uses a system of in-game ads that you see when you start up and shut down the game. It also displays a short ad when a character dies, but there is a limit to the number of times you can see the ad in a given period of time. Unfortunately I don't remmeber what that period of time is, so I can't give a completely accurate picture.

- Shadowbane is a game developed by the Ubisoft group, it is likely that the revenue for the game to continue to run is brought accross from sales of other games the company has produced, also announcements of Shadowbane 2 have appeared on their site with a few forum members using the signature 'Waiting for Shadowbane 2' as well.--Nyimen 07:58, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Site
I'm rather confused by the [4] site. Is there an expansion pack or some other game (is this basically Shadowbane 2 or something?) which is not free? Or is this site just incredibly outdated? Or what? I suggest a clarification would be added to the article Nil Einne 16:25, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Also, I just found out from the fileplanet site that the free version is for US & Canada only. I presume there are therefore no non-US & Canada servers. Does FilePlanet only allow people to download from the US & Canada (I appreciate the game is available from places other then fileplanet) Does the EULA require people to live in US & Canada? Is the US & Canada part actively enforced, e.g. by an IP block or by admins blocking people who admit to not coming from the US & Canada? All in all, the article doesn't explain many things very well Nil Einne 16:34, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- I believe it's Shadowbane's site that is outdated, not so much this article. I do not know about fileplanet's policies or anything, so I can't begin to tell you whether or not international players can play this game or not. Sorry. Perhaps you could ask on a forum or fansite? - The fileplanet file is heavily bugged, and the "new" official site has a link to an improved free download of the latest install version, available to anyone with an internet connection. Also, the game supports Asian language characters, so I assume that the game is available regardless of your country of origin. The gist of the EULA is that "hate comments" are not allowed (for political correctness), you cannot sell copies of the game for profit (as its free), and some other legal stuff. --Zenoseiya 15:33, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

- Last I heard there were supposedly two new european servers that came online, I dont exactly know when but there is a link on the UK version of the games site that names one of them.--Nyimen 09:10, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] HODs?
Maybe something should be mentioned about the PacRim players overrunning the game? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.52.252.194 (talk) 22:09, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Don't think this problem is isolated to Shadowbane. Anyway, why would Pacific Rim players be a minority on a game? --206.126.170.20 (talk) 02:44, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] FREE
this game is not free i just checked the website. You must purchase the game for $39.99 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iversonforlife (talk • contribs) 20:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- It is free, only Ubisoft no longer officially supports the game and hasn't updated the official site. http://chronicle.ubi.com/ is up to date, however. (Satertek (talk) 04:40, 9 June 2008 (UTC))
