Sharon Johnston Park

Sharon Johnston Park is a county park located in north Madison County, Alabama near New Market, Alabama, about 20 minutes from downtown Huntsville, Alabama. The park consists of over 250 acres and features a twelve acre fishing lake, Olympic-size swimming pool, campground facilities, picnic shelters & pavilions and open air barbecue grills. The park project was originated and developed by former county commission chairman James Record and the Madison County Commission in the 1970s.

Fishing is allowed in the lake, which is stocked with catfish, bream, bass and crappie. A state fishing license and purchase of a $1.50 fishing permit is required. Fishing hours are from 6:30 a.m. till 30 minutes before sundown 7 days a week. No boats or canoes are allowed on the lake.[1]

The park's pool opens each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and stays open through August. Pool hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The pool is closed on Mondays except when a holiday falls on Monday. Daily admission charge is $3 for adults and $1 for children 4 years and younger. Yearly passes can be purchased.[2]

Numerous events such as an annual children’s fishing tournament are held at the park.

Directions: Drive north on Memorial Parkway to Winchester Road. Turn right onto Winchester Road and later turn left on Coleman Road. The park is located at 783 Coleman Road in New Market, Alabama.
