Seodaemun-gu is a gu located in northwestern Seoul, South Korea. Seodaemun-gu incorporates residential and historical areas. It is home to several prominent universities, including Yonsei and Ewha, Bongwon Temple and the notorious Seodaemun Prison.[2] The district covers 17.6 square kilometers, approximately 2.9% of the total area of Seoul. Seodaemun literally means "Great West Gate" which was one of the four great gates in the wall surrounding the Joseon capital city of Hanyang; only Dongdaemun and Bukdaemun survive intact. Seodaemun-gu is populated by middle and upper-income families.
