Since returning to Ahly, he as been a hit, performing excellently with his national team during the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana, and alongside Manucho Goncalves and Flavio Amado was one of the pillars of the team during the campaign. With his consistent dazzling performances, and inch-perfect crosses, Gilberto has proved himself to be one of Ahly's best performers in the 2007-2008 season in the Egyptian League, which has made him one of the firm favorites for the Egyptian Premier League Player of the Year award.
