The Señor de Burgos Church is in the quarter of La Laguna, Small square of Independencia, in Chachapoyas, capital of the Amazonas region of Peru. This temple is dedicated to the memory of this important Christian figure. This temple served a good number of believers in Chachapoyas and in Peru in general. The people of Chachapoyas attribute a number of miracles to the Señor de Burgos, for which they are thankful. He is well-loved and venerated in the city.
The church, completely constructed in adobe, was built during the 17th century. Since then it has served as a center of worship and permanent veneration to the Señor de Burgos. Over the centuries, the church survived several successive earthquakes such as the registered ones in 1929 and 1970. As a result, the building facade was altered somewhat.
On September 25, 2005, at approximately 8:50 pm, an earthquake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the North of Peru. Chachapoyas, very close to the epicentre, suffered serious damage. One of the buildings most affected by the earthquake is the Señor de Burgos Church, damaged to such an extend that it has been closed for worship, something that had never happened within the temple's history. The traditional Thursday visits and the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist stays suspended.
Cracks and detachments show the calamitous state of the Church. On the right side of the facade the situation is terrible. An enormous crack demonstrates the force of the quake, and the risk of a collapse is very high. The adjacent buttresses are on the verge of collapsing and the walls are obviously parted. The later part presents major danger. Multiple cracks have destabilized the whole wall that gives to the reredos, putting in risk the inhabitants of nearby houses. In the interior the structure shows the damage in countless fissures. The stairs for access to the choir are very damaged. The vestry has stayed in a very bad shape, with cracks and detachments throughout. The entire damage is the reason for the disqualification of the temple thanks to the risk of an imminent collapse.
The image of the Señor de Burgos and all other images have been withdrawn and at present they are in the house of Missis Hilda Rodríguez Eguren. The equipment and banks also have been located in the lounge contiguous to the temple.
The specialists recommend the demolition of the Church and his reconstruction. To recover the ancient tower and frontage of the church through reconstruction is the target of the committee and the believers.
All the faithful and the whole city is sorrowing and greatly desirwa that the Señor de Burgos Church could open its doors again. The challenge of building the temple is complicated; the principal difficulty is the absence of economic resources.
