Images can only be used if they are released under the GFDL licence by the copyright owner. The images you posted either gave no copyright information, had a more restricted tag (eg use for wikipedia only), or did not make it clear that ESA had released these images under the GFDL or into the public domain.

If these really are free-use images for any purpose, you need to specify for each image the exact source and the source of the copyright owner's permission for GFDL/public domain use (or an appropriate tag for eg US government stuff, which is nearly always PD). hope this helps, jimfbleak 16:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

I think the problem is the restriction to Wikipedia only, or to educational use. These tags are more restrictive than the GFDL licence, particularly the former. However, I can see that ESA is a difficult case - pity they haven't just made the stuff fully public domain like NASA. You state that other articles use ESA images, and if that is the case, I won't delete again if they are reposted. Sorry if I've caused you grief, since your edits were obviously in good faith. jimfbleak 14:18, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Trouble is that Wikipedia is hosted on US servers, so they're scared stiff of the legal consequences of releasing material as GFDL when the copyright owner hasn't specifically permitted that or PD. Material on Wikipedia can be used for any purpose, including advertising, as I understand it, as long as it fulfils the GFDL licence terms. The ESA permission reserves some very limited rights. From the discussion, either ESA or Wikipedia has to change its licensing policy, crazy when they are so close. These days, I only post my own images, out of copyright or US fed gov stuff because everything else is too complicated (I've had good faith uploads deleted too)

I have tagged Image:Mars_Express_Power_Subsystem_In_flight_Experience.pdf as {{orphaned fairuse}}. In order for the image to be kept at Wikipedia, it must be included in at least one article. If this image is being used as a link target instead of displayed inline, please add {{not orphan}} to the image description page to prevent it being accidentally marked as orphaned again.
