[edit] New article after merge

This is merged from the original here and the Western Union Telegraph Expedition article creating this here. Then I expanded and cleaned it up a lot and included most of the original material in some form or another. However, I could not find the source this paragraph below (or much more about the Alaska section at all, for that matter) and therefore, I am putting it here on the talk page until someone figures out what to do with it:

"However, maps indicate that the territory of Alaska was served by a telegraph line that ran along much of the original route surveyed by Kennicott in 1865-66. Hudson Stuck's 1917 map of Alaska, drawn at the scale of 1:5,000,000 or eighty miles to the inch, shows the telegraph and cable line from St. Michael to Copper Center and ending at Chitina."

Also, while I'd realized the Collins Overland telegraph was an important part of British Columbia history, I'd never researched it to this extent before and am frankly astonished at the impact that it had. If Alaska, the Yukon and Russia were equally affected, I've neglected it here, not out of any BC bias, because I simply don't have/coudn't fine the material. I think more expansion might be neccessary to properly flesh it out.CindyBotalk 12:41, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
