Rose is a busty fictional character in the British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. She was portrayed by two actresses: Shirley Stelfox in series one, and the late Mary Millar from series two onwards.
Rose is Hyacinth Bucket's more attractive, albeit ageing, sister, and as Emmet describes her: 'The one with the friendly legs.' She is the only sister of the flowery four (Hyacinth, Daisy, Violet and herself) who is unmarried; although apparently she was once married since in one episode she muses: 'I wonder if I should marry again.'
Short-skirted and flirtatious, Rose is lost in love and tangled in romance. She chases married men and wears revealing outfits, heavy make-up and short skirts, often giving an overall perception of her as a tarty, cheap and common woman. Inevitably, Hyacinth fears her sister's image will damage her very own, and attempts to keep Rose hidden away from her associates in order to save face. Rose is always willing to involve herself in Hyacinth's life, often to chase the (married) Vicar or Hyacinth's neighbour, Emmet, both of whom are at first scared of her but later somewhat attracted to her, notably because of her provocatively large bust, 'friendly legs' and a tendency to sit on their laps. The Vicar's jealous wife calls her the 'vampire sister.' However, despite her flirtatious and provocative nature, Rose is a gentle soul who is troubled in love, and a character who seems to be ignored by Aphrodite. Like Hyacinth, appearance is everything to her, despite her social aims being very different.
Rose lives in a council house with sister Daisy, Daisy's husband Onslow and her father, always referred to as 'Daddy'. Rose's surname is never given in the series, though other sources have referred to her as 'Rose Bucket,' which is unlikely since this is Hyacinth's married name.
