Talk:Rockville Centre, New York
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"make this Village a great place to live, work, and raise a family"-- Phrases like that aren't neutral. The whole thing looks like it was copied and pasted from a Rockville Center brochure, with no respect from cross-linking to other articles.Mattweinberg 07:21, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Commonwealth Spelling
This article is about Rockville Center, which is located in New York, an American state. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the American English "center" in the article as opposed to the Commonwealth English "centre"? Héous 17:09, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
No, because the name of the village IS Rockville Centre, not "Center".
[edit] Obviously Bias! Not everyone thinks RVC is perfect - far from it.
I agree very strongly with Mattweinberg. Statements like "make this Village a great place to live, work, and raise a family" are not neutral and the entire article does sound like it came from the RVC brochure. If the article is allowed to stay as is, I think the "other" side of the story should be told. I can tell you all about the crime, drugs, gang violence, and untold instances of "quality of life" issues that are either being ignored by the village or cannot be resolved because they don't have enough cops on the force. And don't even get me started on the lack of adequate and convenient parking. I've lived here for over 25 years, I should know. Someone needs to do something about this article, make it TRUTHFUL, and not just a way to try and hype up the village, as the Mayor and RVC chamber of commerce have been doing for years. Perhaps when I have more time I'll set the record straight with some facts that will make your head spin.
Response to "Obviously Bias!"
Here you go: great place to live - the incorporated village of Rockville CentRE has its own police force (Nassau County cops have no juridiction in the town) that police the streets while all are sleeping and make sure cars are off the roads--keeping suspicious vehicles out of town. Also we have ordinances and laws that prevent people from building houses too close together -- most everyone with a home has a yard. Great place to work: with 60+ restaurants, teenagers and adults can make some money and have some fun. Plenty of medical offices operate smoothly in the town, and there are some great small businesses - family owned and corporate owned alike. GReat place to raise a family -- South Side High School is one of the best in the country. The entire school system is quite excellent. There are tons of parks and fields available, and there are many neighborhoods in town that practically coexist on their own ie. Bryn Mawr area, Greystone area.
Don't claim that the town and its government is promoting RVC by posting on Wikipedia; rather, it is the townspeople who love to live, work and raise a family here. Don't be bitter because you hate it. Move to Oceanside and enjoy real people who don't have their noses up in the air.
Follow Up to "Obviously Bias!"
Ahh, but still you have not mentioned anything about the gangs, crime, and quality of life issues which have increased GREATLY in the last 10-20 years. You sound brainwashed or at the very least not mature enough to see past your limited childhood memories of RVC, not street wise at all, and certainly not living with your eyes open to the real truth. I'm sorry sweetie, if you don't have enough life experience to see through all of the hype because your naivety will cause you problems in life.
Hey, I use to live in Suffolk County - back in the day when there were deer roaming next to the Long Island expressway and you could sleep with your doors unlocked. But things change. Everything changes and Long Island, not just RVC, is being overrun by crime and illegal drug activity and quality of life issues.
Yes, Rockville Centre USE to be one of the best places to live on Long Island, 10-20+ years ago. But like I said, unfortunately things change and RVC has changed quite a bit since you were in diapers. The truth is everyone who has a job in RVC, everyone who owns a house in RVC, and everyone who owns a business or works in a business in RVC has reason to hype it up and make it sound better than it is. They’re just trying to protect their house values and their lively hoods, and their childhood/family memories in some cases. I’m just telling the truth because if you lie about the problem it just makes it worse. Let me repeat that, because that is the main reason why I wrote this in the first place (not, as you ignorantly stated, because I am bitter and hate it) but because if we continue to ignore the problems they will just get worse. You may not understand, but I think most able minded mature adults who have a clue about the real world understand what I’m talking about. Not to mention the article simply ignores the rules of Wikipedia.
I guess I have to let you in on another fact of life - Oceanside isn’t much better. In fact I know people who have moved out of Oceanside because the quality of life there has declined too. And, I have personally been the victim of assault in Oceanside (and I’ve been mugged in Lynbrook, and had my car broken into in East Meadow, a friend was attacked and raped in Central Islip, shall I continue?) so I can tell you first hand Oceanside (and many other places on Long Island) is no better. Like I said, Long Island has a huge problem with crime, drugs, gangs, violence, etc., and RVC is NOT the Mayberry it’s being hyped up to be. Not any more. Grow up and open your eyes. The neighborhood has changed and it will never be the same again.
Oh yes, and telling people to move if they don’t like it is nothing less than juvenile and asinine.
Well you can say this and that about Long Island and RVC and Oceanside, but what you all fail to realize is that these quality of life issues are nothing compared to the daily occurances in the 5 boroughs. Most of us moved out here to get away from all the lowlife in the city anyway. Bias this and Bias that, its still the truth that RVC is one of the better neighborhoods on long island, and that Oceanside, RVC and Lynbrook are surrounded by garbage.
I personally think your nuts if you think Rockville Centre is not a great place it live. Besides all of the great benefits of having easy access to the beaches and NYC, there is no more of a drug problem, gang problem (which there are none I grew up there very recently) or crime problem then any other great place in America. I think you’re the one who needs to open your eyes because I pray every day that I am fortunate enough to raise my family in Rockville Centre when I get older. When I am away at college, RVC looks like a dream compared to all of the activity that I have been exposed to over the last 4 years in other states and towns.
HAHAHA gangs in RVC? Are you an 80 year old lady that locks herself inside all day? There are no gangs in Rockville Centre. And if there were such a thing, they are probably 15 year old posers with candy cigarettes in their mouth.
[edit] Some suggestions
We could really use some images: it would be great if someone there would take some photos, add them to the Commons, and transclude them here.
Also: you'd never really know from reading this that Rockville Centre has one of the strongest town centers on the south shore. Something about that central business district would really strengthen the article. - Jmabel | Talk 01:29, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
