It appears that this article violates the proper "Usage note", as the title is used as a noun (the practice) and yet in the definition it is an adjective concerning a "closed-communion" church. Is there a good way to fix this? Rlvaughn 23:30, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I'm not sure it's a violation. The title of an article could be continuity and the definition within the article could define continuous. Since this is written in English one would assume the reader knows the connection between the two words. Michael Hardy 23:44, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Let's try it:

A real-valued function f of a real variable is continuous at a point x in its domain precisely if for every ε > 0 (no matter how small), there exists δ > 0 such that whenever | y − x | < δ then | f(y) − f(x) | < ε.

To me, that reads very naturally. Continuous seems unsuitable to be an article title because it is an adjective rather than a noun (I moved absolutely continuous to absolute continuity). But continuous fits the sentence above better than continuity does.

[edit] Query on date of origin of the East Texas Musical Convention

I've enjoyed your recent additions covering the Sacred Harp tradition. Thanks very much for adding them to the Wikipedia.

For the new article on the East Texas Convention, there seems to be a bit of conflicting data that you could probably resolve. For the date of origin of the Convention the www.texasfasola.org site gives 1868, which would agree with http://newsletter.texasfasola.org/issues/augdec2003.pdf which lists the 2003 convention as the 135th. Can you clarify? It looks like either the Wikipedia or www.texasfasola.org ought to be adjusted. Thanks, Opus33 18:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Opus, there are several places out there in which an incorrect date of origin for the East Texas Musical Convention has been supplied. My friend Gaylon's texasfasola site is one of them. The Handbook of Texas Online is another. I have tried to get it changed on the Handbook of Texas, but that will be a long process. Gaylon will probably change his when he gets time.

1855 is the correct date of origin, although there is only one source for this date. Mr. W. R. Adams of Gregg County, Texas wrote a letter to Aldine S. Kieffer, editor of The Musical Million, in which he speaks of the Convention, including its formation in 1855. Adams served as both a President and a Secretary of the Convention, so he should have been in a position to know. Both Jackson (in White Spirituals..) and Cobb (in The Sacred Harp...) give the 1855 date (based on Adams. The 1868 date is the date from which the Convention counts its continuous annual sessions. They did not meet for 3 or 4 years at the end of the "Civil" War. We have records from 1868, but not from 1855. You might be interested to know that we are working on applying for an historical marker (150 years in 2005) and that I am also working on a history for the anniversary. ED. MILLION: - I have just returned from attending the East Texas Musical Convention and thinking you would like to hear from this part of the country musically, I send you some of the proceedings. This is the oldest musical body in the State. It was organized in 1855, and has held its annual sessions regularly except three or four years during the war. Its organizers adopted the Sacred Harp, by White & King, (four shape notes) at the start and has held to it up to date. But "light is spreading," and many of the members of the old East Texas Convention are coming into the late and easy style (seven shape) and as evidence we had a great many copies of TEMPLE STAR from which several lessons of music were sung. I carried SHARON’S DEWY ROSE and SPIRIT WHISPERS and showed them around; I sung from them and all expressed themselves highly pleased with them. I carried with me the July number of THE MILLION from which was sung the specimen pages of the coming book – THE TRIBUTE. All say that you, Mr. Editor, are doing a fine work for the Character Notes, and many promised to send for THE MILLION this fall. We had some of the round headed fraternity with us, but they joined in the music like men. If they had any prejudices they kept it to themselves. I was one of three placed on the Committee on Publication. We could not make any report with so short a time, consequently we have till the next annual meeting to report, and with the light before me I am sure that Ruebush, Kieffer & Co.,’s works will be highly recommended, if not adopted. You know it takes time to clear a new road of its stumps. The East Texas musical organization is a very large body extending over five or six counties. Its last session was held at Carthage, Panola County. Its next session will be held at Pea Town, Gregg county, commencing Thursday before the fourth Sunday in July, 1881. More another time. W. R. I'm confused by this sentence:

They seem to have preserved among them the primitive manual called the Teaching of the Apostles, for Bishop Longland in England condemned an Anabaptist for repeating one of its maxims "that alms should not be given before they did sweat in a man's hand." This was between 1518 and 1521.

Did they preserve the manuals betwen 1518 to 1521, or were they condemned between this date? - Ta bu shi da yu 13:42, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ta bu shi da yu, I'll have to look into this. That was part of the original article that I left intact. I would suppose that is when they were condemned. I think Longland was bishop around that time. I'll let you know if I find anything more. - Rlvaughn 22:16, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Fundamentalist Christian Viewpoint Needed at Pat Robertson

Given your interests and affiliations I'm assuming you are a Fundamentalist Christian, I hope you will forgive me if you are not. I'll be blunt the Pat Roberton article is a disgrace and embarassment to wikipedia. By the time one finishes reading it one might think Rev. Robertson was the anitchrist rather than an evangelist. The article is one sided and completely viliafies him. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge or interst in theology to make such changes. Neither do other concerned wikipedians. This is why I am contacting you, I hope that you do and will be willing to salvage the article.

Mr. Carriker, I took a look at it, and I think you're correct that this is a mostly one-sided article. I don't have much time to spend on it right now (I'm working on getting a historical marker for the East Texas Musical Convention and writing a book/booklet for its 150th anniversary next year). I'll try to remember to spend some time on it later. RLV, thanks very much for adding the study by Kyme to Shape note. I was able to hunt this article down in a nearby library and found it fascinating. Too bad no one seems to have followed this up, either scientifically or in terms of practical action. Searching for further work by Kyme, I found a book of children's songs from 1962 but nothing else after that. I wonder if Kyme might have had shape notes in his own background. Don't feel bad. There were Six-principle Baptists that were Calvinistic, but there's just not an article (nor even very much information of which I'm aware) about them. The Primitive Baptists might be a good group to add to the Calvinism category. Though they usually steer clear of referring to themselves as Calvinists, they do hold to the five points that are usually considered Calvinism. - Rlvaughn 02:24, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. Thanks very much for the positive feedback, and thanks as well for spotting that anachronism in Sacred Harp concerning the Cooper book and Africa--of course, my own copy is a 2000 edition. I'm beginning to suspect you must have quite a library!

I have a fairly decent collection of Sacred Harp books (as well as other tune and hymn books). The two main things I am missing are a 1902 Cooper book and a 1936 Denson book. 1936 Densons have been on ebay a few times, but going for much more than I wanted to pay. A 1902 Cooper may be as hard to find as a needle in a haystack.

Hi there, Rlvaughn. I am really not sure about the spelling in that line. It is not a huge thing, but I think having the original spelling is good, on the other hand "wee" and "we" are not that different as if we were to change a word like "thou" to "you". But in the interest of accuracy of the statement, leaving it in the old English would be better. The problem is, "comaund" and "wee", do look a little like typos, and not old English.
