Thanks, Karmafist
I'm a rank newbie here, just getting my feet wet by starting with contributions to the low-budget American and Korean animation categories. I'm probably making goofs right and left (I notice the video cover scans I uploaded yesterday are about 10 times the average size-- I'll cut them down later).
Not even sure if I'm going about responding to your Welcome in a kosher fashion... Trial and error...
Thanks again,

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Shim_Hyung-rae.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:Shim_Hyung-rae.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 06:35, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Good job on Nah Woon-gyu article
Hello! I've seen your work on Contemporary Korean cinematography. Stellar work. Many Korea-related pages are in dire need of expansion and clean up, and your help is greatly appreciated by many editors here. I, myself, have been trying to expand on articles relating to History of Korea and Military of Korea. Anywho, keep up the good work and have a nice day! Deiaemeth 07:19, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Deiaemeth. Thanks for the kind words. I'm pretty new here, but greatly enjoying the work I've been doing so far. I started out on some low-budget '50s and '60s American animation that my son and I enjoy together, but have wandered into Korean film and animation now. I scanned in the video covers to my Ureme VHS collection-- you might enjoy taking a look at them starting with Ureme 1.
I'm hoping to have a free hour or so tonight to fill in some of the gaps on the Cinema of Korea page. I notice the Cinema of Japan page can use some help too, but since Japanese film is better known in the English-speaking world, I'll leave Japan for others while I do what I can to help on the Korea page first.
Thanks for the thumbs-up-- It's good to hear some feed-back from someone!

Thank you for linking that source for Lang's mother's ethnicity! On following the link I realised that that page had been linked once before: the previous link must have been deleted at some point. --Chips Critic 15:53, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Columns at Filmography of Broncho Billy Anderson
I'm still fairly new here and haven't figured out how to use all the formatting properly. I started a Filmography of Broncho Billy Anderson page, and have added columns to this long list of films, to make it more readable. I copied the "div style="width:50%; float:left" format tag off another page without really understanding how it works. The problem is, when I use it at this page, it throws some of the date headers off. 1909, 1912, 1913 and 1914 have been shifted over the second column rather than the first. Any help, explanation, or pointer to where to find help would be much appreciated. Rizzleboffin 23:54, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Rizzleboffin. Welcome to Wikipedia. Sure is a good thing to see a competent editor who knows how to ask questions in a civil manner, you should see some of...
- I'm getting off track. This is a rather makeshift solution, but putting < br clear=all > (minus spaces) before each new headline should work. Check the results here. GofG ||| Contribs 00:05, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Worst president ever AfD
I thought it best to take my response to your comment about being a confused newbie here, since I want to keep the AfD page uncluttered. The difference, in this case, is that the Historical rankings of United States Presidents article relies on decades of published material to describe the historical academic consensus, while the Worst president ever article relies on a single survey to imply or even state that George W. Bush is the worst President ever (which he could well be, although Polk, Harrison, and Harding are also in the running). As the NPOV policy says (roughly), if you think you can tell, after reading an article, what the contributors' position on the issue at hand is, it isn't NPOV. It might actually be best to restrict your contributions to political articles until you get the hang of it. Politics is my life and my major, but I avoid touching most politics articles because I'm not yet certain in my ability to keep a cool head on it. Stick around for a while, get a feel for how things are done. For political articles, maybe work on making small changes on fairly uncontroversial subjects, and then work your way deeper.
By the way, when responding to people's comments, you can either reply by starting a topic on their talk page with the same title as they used (like I did, check the wikicode of this comment if you need any guidance on that), or responding on your own talk page. It's a matter of personal preference, but try to conform to people's stated preference on the matter. I have no preference, so do as you will. Captainktainer * Talk 17:33, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for the comments and the advice, Captainktainer. I hope I'm not getting overheated and over-stepping the bounds of decorum on the deletion discussion... politics tend to do that to the best of us. Thanks for pointing out that NPOV rule-of-thumb about being able to tell the author's POV, I think it's a good one, and I plead guilty.
- The historical weight behind the Historical rankings of United States Presidents article which, obviously, is lacking in the opinion on Bush makes sense to me. (Though, by that reasoning, Bush, Clinton, and all recent presidents should be excluded from the historical ranking article also...)
- I'm really not a political person and am obviously out of my element here. Actually, I came to Wikipedia to avoid these sorts of battles on other other forums to engage in the (non-political) joy of intellectual pursuit. I've stayed in my own fields-- arts & music-- up till now. When I stumbled across this Worst president ever article, I saw it was blantantly POV but I thought there could be some value in trying to make it NPOV. Obviously the consensus is against me, so I'll just let it go. -- Rizzleboffin 18:32, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image Tagging for Image:King Kong vs Godzilla 1962.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:King Kong vs Godzilla 1962.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. [edit] Image Tagging Image:Eiji Tsuburaya.jpg
|
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Eiji Tsuburaya.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Hetar 04:49, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] South Korea
no doubt the rather trivial issue doesn't belong in the south korea article, but there's no need to be so dismissive. apparently, "korea" was actively preferred over "corea" by at least some japanese officials as a symbol of japanese dominance, even if it probably wasn't an official policy. this article opened my eyes a bit to what i thought was a crazy consipiracy theory, hope you find it interesting [1] Appleby 00:45, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- thanks for the thoughtful note. honestly, i'm not all that passionate about this issue myself, & would've reversed that edit myself if i had noticed it. however, i did not know until i read that article a few weeks ago that there is a document by a japanese official that explicitly rejected the c spelling because it was a sign of korean independence, implying that he probably wasn't the only japanese person with a reason to prefer c & that there must've been a notable number of koreans who considered it an independence issue.
- my guess would be that most koreans before, during, and after the occupation, & today, don't really care whether it's spelled with a c or a k, but a few koreans did care, & that made the few japanese also care, in the opposite direction, which made more koreans take the anti-japanese position, & so on & so forth. as the article notes, there probably was a general prevalence of one spelling before the occupation (despite numerous individual counterexamples), & a few japanese officials or decision-makers were aware of the nationalism around the c spelling, & understandably made some intentional choices, which, in the aggregate, over decades, had an effect on the prevalence of one over the other (western publications obviously relying on the publications of japanese-controlled documents--they can hardly be expected to canvas the streets of seoul to survey the opinions of a colonized people, in the early 20th century). no monstrous conspiracy, no secret imperial mandate, just the collective result of human nature. so at this point, i figure the conspiracy theories have some vague but understandable kernel of truth to their complaints, & the anti-conspiracy theorists also are right to reject the paranoid exaggerations. not that the spelling's gonna change, but the entire dispute is an understandable blow-back.
- anyway, that's my take. Appleby 04:22, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- i don't know if that's a distinction that can be made so easily. anglophone spelling was surely largely dependent on the changing trend in japan's spelling. again, each side's spelling choice was not monolithic or organized, but we're talking about general prevalence. which is also why counterexamples really don't negate the l.a. times point that the change in the prevalent spelling coincided with the occupation. the reasonable inference would be, even though some/many koreans and japanese were not conscious of an organized policy (thus each side now can marshall impressive collection of counterexamples), some japanese in positions to influence the trend did actually influence the trend, & anglophone publications were naturally influenced thereby. it's tenuous enough that you can't say x caused y, but also plausible enough you cannot conclude x did not cause y (as long as x stands for influential individuals, not an official policy). Appleby 07:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
sure, i agree that if someone really wanted to, they could actually do some credible research, that would have to encompass some massive samples from various countries, types of sources, year of composition, intended audience, etc. i suspect neither side is interested because, primarily, it's just not that important, & also, will likely show some statistical trend that can be interpreted either way, with neither side a winner. in the mean time, my whole point was that when someone does bring the topic up, i try to be politely uninterested, rather than dismissive. thanks for a gentlemanly discussion. Appleby 18:01, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
BTW, hey, that's some spectacular work you're doing at Cinema of Korea. i hope you stick around, as many korean culture articles desperately need attention. have you seen Portal:Korea & the noticeboard (on korea-related article talk pages, the template at the top, click [show])? please feel completely free to correct, delete or change what i wrote there, as i just relied on a quick google, just to add some meat to the stub. i suppose there should eventually be separate articles for each of the spinoffs. good luck! Appleby 19:11, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] FilmsWikiProject|class=X|importance=X
If you could put a film banner on all the articles talk pages you've started it would be a big help. I've done the chaplin and keaton ones so far. For class a stub article is class=Stub (capitalized} and for a little bit longer article its class=Start. Same goes for importance. If the article has no significance its class=Low but if it has some its class=Mid and very important is class=High. Your doing a great job, keep up the good work. Andman8 03:34, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
For the general guidelines you can read Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria. However in practice i've found if something is important but really obscure i'll give it a mid rating. Also for example, id give air wardens a Mid rating because it has the notability of being the first of their films made at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. However i'd give angora love and others like it a Low rating simply because its obscure and there is no notability. Andman8 16:11, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about it, no "low" importance articles are going to be deleted and if you don't feel comfortable rating articles because you are attached to them then don't. If there was a wikiproject Laurel and Hardy angora love would be High or Top importance but in something as broad as "film" its more Mid or Low. If you want to make a wikiprojectLH go for it! thats just an example though but you get my point. anyways, thanks again for helping out with wikifilm, i think building an encyclopedia of all human knowledge is super important and helping out in anyway is well -- noble! [edit] Re-ranking film importance
Certainly on one issue I would say I'd judge films by notability: a commoner would come to WP and expect an article on the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Still, no intention of trampling on your contributions, so willingly rerate your articles to Mid-importance. Certainly, these films aren't as popular as Pirates, though both not of the Top-importance I've recently ranked to Ben or Lawrence. Anyway, have a nice day. Wiki-newbie 20:57, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and never heard of Bartok, but I'd rank Rolling Stones and someone like Mussorgsky both equal in importance. Again, have a nice day. Wiki-newbie 20:57, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The strange topic of Korean animation...
Decent work on the Taekwon V article; keep it up!
I was planning to go through and research Korean animation at some point; I've come across strange, interesting clips of Korean animated film that seem to plagarize anime designs across the board and thought they were worth investigating, though time constraints have kept me from doing so for a while...
Anyway, if the topic continues to interest you, I have the following on my plate to look into:
-
- Space Black Knight: uses characters from Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Battleship Yamato and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, in addition to minor villains from Marvel Comics's Daredevil; re-released in Europe from two separate companies as Johnny Destiny: Space Ninja and Captain Cosmos (this was reviewed by a guy in Australia some time back, apparently; video example 1; video example 2)
- Space Gundam V: from as much as I can glean, the title mecha is a modified VF-1A Valkyrie from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and first appears by opening a gigantic boulder from within (nearly identically to Raideen from Brave Raideen). The main character is an alien boy who possesses the body of a dead(?) human boy, reminiscient of Ultraman.
- Ironman 007: uses characters derived from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, though the team in the movie appears to be four members instead of five. The robot they pilot is of an origin apparently unknown to me...
(Also...As much as it disgusts me to admit, the uploads of a certain hateful YouTube user called "Koreandogmeat" have actually presented a thorough reference for output of the '70s and '80s, even though the idiot is using them as examples of Korean "inferiority..." Egh. You may want to take a look anyway, for the sake of research.) --E. Megas 23:54, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 21:27, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Profound Desire of the Gods 1968.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Profound Desire of the Gods 1968.jpg. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:L&H Our Relations 1936.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:L&H Our Relations 1936.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Linkspam
I understand that reviews are permitted in External links, but Wikipedia is not a link farm. The sites that I have been seeking out have been blanketed across Wikipedia's film articles. Please see PC78's talk page for my explanation. I realize that there may be a fine line to this, and I am doing my best not to cross it. I've skipped a few of my subpage entries to look into other cultural genres as well. —Erik (talk • contrib) - 18:51, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Rizzleboffin, hope you don't mind but I pasted your comment onto Erik's talk page. Just wanted to make sure it was read by the person you intended it for. :) Regards. PC78 22:54, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Na_Woon_Gyu.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Na_Woon_Gyu.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 17:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:L&H Bullfighters 1945.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:L&H Bullfighters 1945.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use.
Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Im-Kwon-taek.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Im-Kwon-taek.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 15:41, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Ishiro_Honda.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Ishiro_Honda.jpg.
If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:09, 30 January 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 16:09, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Keaton Seven Chances 1925.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Keaton Seven Chances 1925.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:CC By the Sea 1915.JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:CC By the Sea 1915.JPG. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
-
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
The following images also have this problem:
