[edit] World War II

I remember reading somewhere that the canal was used for transporting war materials. Particularly, Spitfire and Hurricane engines manufactured in small engineering workshops in London and Mosquito parts constructed in previously furniture workshops. I have not been able to find a reference for this use, or indeed any idea where the materials were going for final assembly. Anyone else any ideas on this? Cheers.
