[edit] History

The airport was formerly named Waterloo Regional Airport but it changed its name in March 2004 after Northwest Airlines announced that it would run daily flights to Detroit. Established by Waterloo-Wellington Airport Commission in 1948 and completed in 1950, it became a general aviation facility in 1969. It operates 24 hours and seven days a week.

The former name, Waterloo Regional Airport, is now used by an airport in Waterloo, Iowa.

[edit] Expansion

While the airport has relatively little passenger traffic, it is the 18th busiest airport in Canada by aircraft movements (2007), and underwent a major expansion in 2003. Currently, there are three major commercial airlines serving the area: Mesaba Airlines, a Northwest Airlines affiliate providing service to Detroit, Westjet to Calgary, and Skyservice, providing service to Cancún, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. Canadian airlines have in the past offered commuter flights to Ottawa and Montreal, but these services have never proved successful. The Airport Authority has been in serious talks with Air Canada over a restoration of their Ottawa and Montreal services by their Air Canada Jazz division. Ultimate Ski Vacations has started a service to Mt. Tremblant from Waterloo International Airport in January 2007. Skiers/snowboarders are able to purchase either 3 day or 4 day ski packages. This service is conducted on Voyageur Airways Dash 7 aircraft.

As of late 2005, major vacation charters (primarily to the Caribbean) have begun to operate during their peak season.

On January 17, 2007, Westjet announced new daily seasonal flights to Calgary. This service started on May 14, 2007. On June 27, 2007, WestJet announced that the flights to Calgary would go year-round.

On October 1, 2007, Bearskin Airlines started daily non-stop flights to Ottawa.

Although it has not yet signed a deal with the airport authority, Sunwing Airlines is offering flights to Cancun, Mexico and Montego Bay, Jamaica from this airport starting December 2008 on the sunwing.ca website.
