A woman under the age of 50 is considered a "pink hatter" and she wears pink hats and lavender clothing to gatherings until her 50th birthday when she's "earned" the right to wear the red and purple. It's the one "rule" that is pretty much enforced throughout the RHS

Wouldn't it be useful to have some indication of what the purpose of the organisation is? Being women over 50 and wearing red hats, etc., gives the membership requirement and the uniform, but what do they do? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 20:41, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
For so many members - The Red Hat Society is a 'playgroup' for women of a certain age. OK - so, we are all 50 or older if we are in Red Hats. Under 50 if we are in Pink hats. That's simple enough to understand. Everything else is up to us. What do we do? Whatever we want! The Society offers us various official events to attend all over North America and in the UK. But individual Chapters (alone or in conjunction with other Chapters) will have various invitational gatherings or events. Teas, Parades, Theatre visits. Some gatherings are for a few hours..some a few days. The world truly is our playground.[User: Lady Lace}

At the start the group was strictly a social club, but it has long since expanded into a business entity with several published books, a travel agency, even its own credit card! It's pretty much another way to dupe Boomers out of their money...again!
I thought I read, a few years ago, that The Red Hat Society was started in the early 1900's buy ladies of high society in Georgia or there abouts. They gathered primarily to catch up on the latest gossip while sitting for civilized tea and showing off in their finest apparel. __________________________________________________________________________
I think you have this all wrong ~ surely your concept about the Red Hat Society ~ which is, indeed, a Social Group. With the misconception that it is limited to only Women of a Certain Age ~ the Society defies gravity in many aspects. When Women ~ at and beyond the age of 50 have come to realize ~ is that we have paid our "dues" in life ~ and it is time to do for ourselves. Never with the addage that being without a life-partner means our life is over ~ and ~ since we are unwilling to be satisfied with that of being the partaker of "nurse or purse" for someone who wants just that ~ we have turned our lives around to enjoy the simple sisterhood of friendships with ladies from all walks of life ~ regardless of location or social standing ~ or what society deems is correct or incorrect.
When we don our Red Hats ~ and our Purple Attire (which depicts royalty, by the way) ~ it is to show the world that we can have fun ~ that we are related in that fun ~ that the spice of life isn't necessarily at puberty ~ or at the age of 30 ~ but that we really can enjoy all that life has to offer ~ but it can be done with gusto and with enthusiasm in our heart and lives.
Being enriched in all areas of our lives ~ we gather together in the spirit of the moment ~ whether it is to watch a play ~ shopping together ~ a lovely restaurant ~ or going on a cruise together in the spirit of the Red Hat Society ~ it is the positive reaction we get wherever we go. Our laughter can be heard around the world. The spirit of this movement is catching on in every country of the world ~ and isn't that a wonderful thing ~ to know that in groups of Red and Purple ~ we can still excite others to applaud ~ to forget whatever troubles might be in a personal life ~ and ~ for period of time ~ appreciate others in joy and friendship.
And...there is nothing wrong with that ~ as a matter of fact ~ with all that is wrong with this world ~ and all the sadness that is expanding ~ a group of ladies dressed in bling and laughing together ~ enjoying the friendship of others ~ should be looked upon as positive in all ways.
With a purpose to enjoy ourselves ~ and to do tht in such a way that comes across to others as fun...I should think that would be enough encouragement for anyone to applaud.
Wearing our colors is merely an expression ~ like placing the Exclamation Point at the end of a fun sentence. And, sliding into Home Plate yelling,

It has offered many new friends into my life. Red hat, purple outfit, red feather boas, even purple stockings. Now could you have figured your mother ever wearing that in public. Older women coming out of the nursing home rooms to dress up and have conversation and tea with others instead of sitting around watching TV. Oh to be active again and to be accepted for our age. To have young men tell us how beautiful we all look as we walk down the street in our groups of two to twenty (or more)lifts our hearts like you cannot imagine. So hold your heads up proudly ladies.
