[edit] band name
The bit about them getting "Radio Birdman" from mishearing the song 1970 is totally hilarious; I'd never made the connection before, but it totally makes sense. 171.159.64.10 22:27, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I would like to correct the introduction: I wouldn't think the Birdmen would approve of being called a 'Punk' band. They had specific musical influences that are well known. Their 'go it alone' or 'DIY' attitude/philosophy could be described as overlapping with those of punk. I'm at a loss to suggest a more suitable label if there has to be one, the best advice would come from John Needham at Citadel Records in Sydney or perhaps from Vivian Johnson who wrote the so far definitive book on Radio Birdman.

As far as using the term "punk" to describe the Birdman style is concerned im also not a fan either. As far as the Australian punk scene was concerned they were certainly a front running band, so i can see why they would be genre boxed as punk. But as far as i am concerned the Birdman sound has most of its influences rooted in the Motor City sounds of MC5, and The Stooges, where Deniz Tek grew up. If we are going to catagorize Bridman based on these guys genre then both MC5 and The Stooges where often considered as proto-punk bands, an early punk movement proceeding the 'true punk' sound of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. The proto-punk sound combined the rock 'n' roll stylings of the 60's along with the late 70's punk that was to come which defined the punk movement. As far as im concerned proto-punk is the appropriate term to describe the Birdman style, but i invite others to challenge this. --Lanklan 16:14, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Discography
Hey Birdman fans, i've taken it upon myself to start filling in the blanks of the Birdman discography. I've already done all the studio albums except Zeno Beach as it appears to have been already done, though could do with a makeover, and i dont have the album so i cant really comment on the sound or anything, though im happy to clean in up and make it fit in with the whole "album template". Im going to move onto the live albums, singles, and compilations later, but currently i've been completing a major overhaul of the Deniz Tek page, and have started the New Race article along with the The First and Last album, im also going to start the Angie Peppers Band, and The Visitors page. If anyone wants to help out with the Birdman discography please contact me becuase i dont have many of the non-studio albums, so i can only really go off album reviews in terms of reviewing the sound of the albums. Anyway happy editing. --Lanklan 16:05, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- Excellent! You've made some great contributions, Lanklan. On a personal note, I was lucky enough to be able to go and see Birdman in NYC in September. Zeno Beach is a resepectable effort, and their delivery of the new songs at the show endeared me to it even more. Twalls 18:24, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- Oh my god, i envy you greatly. I havn't heard any of the new stuff Birdman have produced, partly out of fear that like most reunion albums it will suck, but its good to hear that they dont. I was going to see them earlier this year in Melbourne but i was yet again shattered that it was overage, so i couldn't get in. Really just tragic for me. Thanks for the encouragment anyway, i've only been a contributer to wikipedia since a few weeks ago, so any praise is encouraging. --Lanklan 14:07, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lyrics
What about the debt Radio Birdman owes to Blue Öyster Cult? A few of their songs freely borrow lines from BOC.
"The light that never warms" BOC: Astronomy RB: Hand of Law
"On your feet or on your knees" BOC: Name of live album RB: Do the Pop
...not to mention the numerous BOC covers they've done over the years: Transmaniacon MC, Hot Rails (are there more?)
and then there are the Iggy/Stooges references that I don't have the time to list...by the way, I'm not knocking them for this -- one of the things I really like about RB is that they are big fans, just like us.
By the way, just saw them last night in San Francisco. Great show but a disappointment that Pip wasn't there.
