Prix Morny

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prix Morny is a Group 1 flat horse race in France for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run over a distance of 1,200 metres (approximately 6 furlongs) at Deauville Racecourse in August.

It was first run in 1865 and was named in memory of Auguste de Morny, a leading figure in French racing who died earlier that year.

Initially the race distance was 1,000 metres (5 furlongs), which was gradually increased from 1866, settling at 1,400 metres (7 furlongs) in 1870. The present distance of the race dates back to 1887.

In the period from 1871 to 1911, the Prix Morny was known as the Prix de Deux Ans.

During World War II, the Prix Morny was transferred from Deauville to Longchamp in 1941, 1942 and 1944, and to Maisons-Laffitte in 1943 and 1945.
