Talk:Port Melbourne, Victoria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've written up some history on Port Melbourne, but there's so much more to add: its relation to Melbourne's postwar immigration history, the Port Melbourne Lighthouse, information about the docks, Garden City, Fishermans Bend, etc. Cnwb 05:18, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)
The main shopping strip is along Bay Street which over recents years has been transformed entertainment precinct littered with cafes, bars and restuarants of all types, rivalling Chapel St, South Yarra and Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
I have fixed up this rather convoluted sentence, and removed the "rivalling" section, because I believe it to be POV. Cnwb 02:17, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
FIsherman's Bend has just warranted a substantial historical treatment (see refs.) and a library exhibition in its own right. Why then has it recently been incorporated into the Port Melbourne entry?
[edit] Fishermans Bend neighbourhood name
There are multiple references to "Fishermens Bend" - a name that appears to have been consigned to "historical" status on 18 May 1977, and officially replaced with "Fishermans Bend" (http://services.land.vic.gov.au/vicnames/place.html?method=edit&id=15591). The local government authority for the area (http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au) consistently uses the "Fishermans Bend" name. Kapunda 14:01, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, but it has no official status - there are plenty of these around Melbourne. The Gazetteer of Australia recognises the name, but not as an official one, and the Melway notes its inclusion in Port Melbourne. Back in 2006, it had an article of its own, but we found it could only be improved so far. The article subsequently got merged in (I think) Nov 2006, and what you see there is almost exactly the complete article. Some local names do eventually become official names - for example, Gardenvale, whose dual status has been confusing us all for months. Orderinchaos 17:15, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, "Orderinchaos" but nothing you wrote has any relevance to my post, however true it might be in its own right. I cited the official source (Registrar of Geographic Names website) proving that "Fishermans Bend" is an official neighbourhood name (not a suburb name), so any misspellings as "Fishermens Bend" need to be corrected. I have nothing further to request. Kapunda (talk) 03:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, I get what you mean - the spelling. Yes, it should be -mans, not -mens. I hadn't noticed that it had been misspelt. Orderinchaos 06:59, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
