Portland Adventist Academy (PAA) is a private high school located in Portland, Oregon, United States operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The school was founded in 1910, and was previously known as Portland Union Academy, serving grades 1-12, but the name changed when the elementary section became its own school, Portland Adventist Elementary School, during a period of rapid growth in 1975. During the process, the high school section was renamed Portland Adventist Academy.
The school is currently undergoing reconstruction and remodeling on the current campus to counteract the effects of the aging buildings.
The school services grades 9 through 12.
[edit] OSAA Lawsuit
The school filed a lawsuit in 2002 against the Oregon School Activities Association because the association did not take into account that PAA's sports teams do not play on Saturday, which is observed as the Sabbath in Seventh-day Adventism. The suit was filed to require the OSAA to accommodate the students' religious beliefs while preparing the state basketball tournament schedule. It was won by the school, and the decision was upheld on appeal.[1] A decision by the Oregon State Supreme Court was announced on May 8, 2008. In it the Court declared that the OSAA must accommodate for religious beliefs. This had been an issue with the school for over twelve years.[2]
