Poling is a village and small civil parish in the Arun District of West Sussex, England, located on a road to the south of the A27 road three miles (4.8km) east of Arundel. The village is small, although there are two Grade I Listed buildings: the Anglican parish church of St Nicholas, in the graveyard of which, Colin Cowdrey, the cricketing legend is remembered, and some remains of St John's Priory (founded by the Knights Hospitallers) alongside the main road. Many of the cottages are also Grade II listed.
The parish has a land area of 320.2 hectares (791 acres). In the 2001 census 173 people lived in 75 households, of whom 96 were economically active.
During Saxon times Poling, like most coastal villages, had outlying areas of land in the Weald of Sussex used for summer grazing and timber production. Thus Poling gave its name to Pallingham north of Stopham and Pallinghurst west of Rudgwick. Poling also had land north of Petworth, then known as "Palinga Schittas", mentioned in a charter of 953 A.D. in connection with the pannage of pigs to feed on acorns[1].
