Poking is an action of tapping and/or softly jabbing another person with the tip of one's finger or a sharp object. This is usually done to gain the other's attention. However, it is also commonly used as a form of teasing, joking around with, or irritating him or her; particularly when performed repeatedly. Poking can also lead to 'poking fights' or 'poking wars', where two people continually poke each other for entertainment or mutual aggravation.
Poking is also used by some young adults as a way of flirting. However, because the poke has a variety of meanings, the person being poked may not realize the other is showing interest.
