This city should not be mistaken for the French Plombières-les-Bains (department of Vosges, in Lorraine) the location of a meeting between Louis-Napoleon III of France and Cavour of Piedmont in 1858, with Napoleon promising aid towards Piedmont in the event of a war against Austria. Through this transaction, Napoleon would receive Nice and Savoy.
