Phoenix Lodge No. 94 is a Craft Lodge in Freemasonry under the jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge of England[1]. Members of Phoenix built the Freemasons' Hall in Queen Street East, Sunderland, which is believed to be oldest purpose-built Masonic Temple in the world and is a Grade 1 Listed Building.[2][3] The Freemasons Hall has been used as such since 1785, the longest continuous usage of a Masonic meeting place in the world.[4] Phoenix is also the oldest Lodge in the city of Sunderland[5] and the second oldest in the Province of Durham.

[edit] History

The Lodge was constituted on 7 October 1755 and is one of the 50 oldest craft lodges in the UK. Phoenix originally met in local inns and taverns before moving to the Masonic Hall in Vine Street, which was dedicated on 16 July 1778, but was destroyed by fire on 20 November 1783. It has met at its present Masonic Hall in Queen Street East since 1785. The original Institution Warrant was lost, believed to be destroyed by the fire that destroyed the Masonic Temple in Vine Street. The Lodge still has the Confirmation Warrant, dated 29 September 1821. It received the Bi-Centenary Warrant on 5 October 1955 and celebrated its 250th Anniversary on 7 October 2005.

[edit] Lodge Meetings

Phoenix Lodge meets on the first Wednesday of each month (except August) at 7.00pm.[6]

The Installation Meeting is held in December at 4.30pm.

As with every other Masonic Lodge, meetings can be attended only by Freemasons, recognised as such by the Grand Lodge. Visitors may be required to provide proper vouchers of their membership of a regular Lodge.

[edit] Officers

Phoenix is presided over by a Master.

The officers of the Lodge are (in order of precedence):

  • Master
  • Senior Warden
  • Junior Warden
  • Chaplain
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Director of Ceremonies
  • Almoner
  • Charity Steward
  • Senior Deacon
  • Junior Deacon
  • Assistant Director of Ceremonies
  • Organist
  • Assistant Secretary
  • Inner Guard
  • Stewards
  • Tyler

This precedence is in accordance with the Book of Constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of England Rule 104(d).[7]

The 'progressive' officerships are shown in bold italics, as they mark the pathway towards becoming Master, from Inner Guard. Traditionally a Brother moves from one position to the next each calendar year. The other officerships are non-progressive in the sense that a Brother might be Charity Steward or Secretary for many years.

The Master and Treasurer are elected by ballot and the Almoner and Tyler by show of hands, at the November meeting. All other officerships are appointed by the Master. Any brother may hold officership, but to serve as Master a brother must have held the office of Warden (either Senior or Junior) for at least one year.

The Master is given the honorific "Worshipful", and is always addressed in speech as Worshipful Master. All Masters of Lodges, present and past (Installed Brethren) are prefixed Worshipful Brother (abbreviated to W.Bro.), Brethren who are not installed are styled Brother (abbreviated to Bro.)

[edit] Ritual

Before the unification of the Grand Lodges to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813, Phoenix Lodge was a member of the Premier Grand Lodge (the Moderns) which pre-dated the Antient Grand Lodge (the Antients) by 34 years. The Moderns Grand Lodge was the first Grand Lodge in Freemasonry in the world. In keeping with these traditional roots, the Lodge works Old Working of the Craft ritual, as opposed to the more modern Emulation Working, which has become common in Craft lodges throughout the English-speaking world.

The Lodge is unusual in that its ceremonies are accompanied by music throughout, with Brethren singing odes and anthems at various points to enhance the ritual, rather than just singing the traditional odes at the start and end.

[edit] Masters of Phoenix Lodge

The records extant detail the Masters of the Lodge from 1778 to the present day - records from 1755 to 1777 have been lost.
The first recorded Master of Phoenix Lodge was John Thornhill, a local merchant in Sunderland.
