Phil Bryant is an American politician from Mississippi. Bryant served as State Auditor since November 1996 when he was appointed to this position by former Governor of Mississippi Kirk Fordice. Bryant was elected to a full term as State Auditor in November 1999 and re-elected in 2003.
Prior to becoming State Auditor, Bryant served five years as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, where he was the Vice Chairman of the Insurance Committee and authored the Capital Gains Tax Cut Act of 1992.
Bryant is currently the Republican Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, having defeated Democratic Party candidate Representative Jamie Franks in the in the 2007 general election,
He is married to the former Deborah Hays of Jackson and they have two children. The Bryants are active members of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Bryant holds undergraduate degrees from Hinds Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He earned a master's degree at Mississippi College where he currently, while serving as Lieutenant Governor, is a professor teaching Mississippi political history.[1]
