[edit] Petroleum refining

From the rather short discussion in this article, it seems petroleum engineers work on finding petroleum, bringing it to the surface, and designing or using pipelines to transport the oil. However, this article does not say petroleum engineers work in petroleum refining. I suppose that is the area of chemical engineers. Does anybody know if petroleum engineers get involved in petroleum refining?

[edit] Re: Petroleum refining

Petroleum engineers usually do not get involved in petroleum refining. You are correct in your supposition that petroleum refining is the area of chemical engineers.

[edit] Types

I am a student of Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Here at CSM we divide the industry into these sub-categories: Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, and Production Engineering. The Society of Petroleum Engineers adheres to the same convention. I would suggest changing the name of the category Subsurface Engineer to Production Engineer. A Production Engineer has the same responsibilities as described for a "Subsurface Engineer," but the name "Production Engineer" is more in line with conventional industry terminology.

In the UK and a lot of other places you've also got Production Technologists, and Petrophysicists classified as petroleum engineers, also Drillign Engineering is quite a specific role, as there are completion engineers etc. But i agree witht he idea of calling subsurface engineers production engineers, as subsurface at least in my mind refers to reservoir engineers Philbentley 14:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] HOLE PACK-OFF
