Petar Jelić (born in Modriča, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, then Yugoslavia) is a Bosnian football striker, he currently plays for OFK Beograd.
Petar played for FK Modriča Maxima in the Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina until he signed with FC Nürnberg of the German Bundesliga. FC Nürnberg had loaned Jelić to Second Division side Carl Zeiss Jena, but he could not gain a place in the first team. After his return to Nürnberg, he was sold to OFK Beograd.
Petar Jelić's father is the Bosnian Serb politician Milan Jelić. Many fans of the national team believe that Petar's father used his political power to influence U21 manager Ibrahim Zukanović into making Petar captain of the side at 18 years of age, a time when the young and inexperienced Jelić hardly possessed the ability to be a reserve in the side, let alone the team's starting center forward and captain.[citation needed] Recently, Zukanović demoted Jelić to the bench in favor of a striker partnership consisting of Teplice target man Edin Džeko and Alemannia Aachen forward Vedad Ibišević. Petar responded to this by making himself unavailable to selection on grounds that he was descriminated against because he is an ethnic Serb, while coach Zukanović, Džeko and Ibisević are all Bosnian Muslims. However, it should be noted that this row is really over nepotism and not ethnic differences, because other Bosnian Serbs such as Damir Memišević, Marko Maksimović and Jelić's former teammate at FK Modriča Maxima Nemanja Stjepanović are all important member's of Zukanović's squad.
