[edit] Exeter userbox

Hello PatPeter - Many thanks for the Exeter userbox - much appreciated. Fell free to borrow any formatting, boxes, etc. that you find on my userpage if it helps. We have all looked in amazement at others' userpages and wanted to do the same...  :-)) Were you at Exeter? Best wishes, Ian Cairns 09:02, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Userboxes

No, unfree images are not to be used in userboxes. See Wikipedia:Fair use#Policy, point 9: "Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages." - Mike Rosoft 21:37, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, 1) If you have to post on a completely random part of my talk page then do it in the right place.
2) I made the image myself, started it in paint, if you dont believe me extract the log from the image and check it. I
gave the site and the logo licensing because I did not know about the doctrine. -23PatPeter* 21:53, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Is Image:Marist high school (Oregon) Logo.gif a reproduction of the school logo? If so, then it doesn't matter that you have made the reproduction yourself; you still can't submit it to Wikipedia under any license, because its design belongs to the school, not to you - unless the school specifially permits such a release. As such, it is probably usable in an article about the school as fair use, but not on your user page. (If I did myself the work with retyping the Lord of the Rings into a computer file, I wouldn't have created an original work for which I can claim copyright or release it under some license; it would still be protected by original copyright.)

I am going to ask at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems if my interpretation of the copyright laws and Wikipedia policies is correct. Regards, Mike Rosoft 15:14, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

And sorry about posting in the wrong section, I didn't notice the correct one. - Mike Rosoft 15:34, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
No problem about posting in the wrong area! It just startled me how you posted above my text box and not below it. -23PatPeter* 18:09, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for changing the copyright. The logo is a universal logo belonging to the Marist Brothers, so if I can contact the head brother and have him release the copyright like you said I can use the logo on my userpage right? I am a graduate of MHS in Illinois and I affiliated myself a good amount with the brothers. I am going to ask what copyright that would be if I got that permission. -23PatPeter* 18:09, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Moving userboxes

Hi PatPeter: just a reminder that if you move userboxes to userspace please use the move tab instead of cutting and pasting the contents. —METS501 (talk) 17:20, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
