One real intersting fact about P. Metheny is not mentioned on this page: Pat was given a full scholarship to University of Miami's music school. Very shortly after he enrolled, he decided he couldn't hack it and told the administration he was planning on dropping out. Hearing this, the University of Miami immediately offered him a teaching position, which he took. Going to UM is where he likely met Jaco Pastorius, so I think his time in Miami is notable.

This article reads like a description of Pat Metheny Group, not Pat Metheny. We need to put something in here about Pat and move all of the detailed PMG stuff to the PMG article. A light overview of PMG as one of Pat's long-term projects would be sufficient. I might want to make a large reorganization of this article if no-one objects. Thoughts? This article has about as much text on the Pat Metheny Group as the main article on the Pat Metheny Group. That's too much duplication. We should either 1) move more info on PMG to the PMG article, or 2) merge the two articles.Bsharvy 08:32, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thin or heavy pick?

Either somebody should finally clear this dispute up by providing a clearly sourced answer, or the whole sentence should probably be removed. The periodic unexplained to-ing and fro-ing between 'thin' and 'heavy' serves no useful purpose. Guy Hatton 06:51, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Update: a Google search on the subject suggests strongly that 'thin' is the correct answer, but it might be preferable if somebody could post a reference where this information comes 'from the horses mouth'. So far, I have not found any direct quote from Metheny confirming his use of (or preference for) a thin pick. I shall leave the 'citation needed' tag in place, but try to ensure that the text reads 'thin' for the time being. Guy Hatton 14:53, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I realize my words doesn't carry much weight, since I'm anonymus. But, Metheny personally gave me one of his picks. (In a situation where i had lost my own, and needed to borrow.) It is a large pick, extremely thin. Metheny uses it "sideways, so it bends around the thumb and acts like a sort of medium pick. regards. The writing on the pick spells simply "Pat Metheny."

There's a lot of personal point-f-view in this article....

  • "Metheny has written over 200 pieces and continues to push musical limits in both his composition and performance."
  • The entirety of the "Side Projects" and "Guitar Contributions" sections
  • "Pat took part in recording some of the CDs by his elder brother, trumpeter Mike Metheny [3], a talented jazz musician and a trumpet player"

These opinions need to be attributed to a notable source, e.g. "Jazz guitarist Jim Hall has said Metheny pushes musical limits..." or deleted.Bsharvy 08:40, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Also, the entire section on Kenny-G seems pretty gratuitous. Why is that a central to an encyclopedia entry for Pat Metheny? It seems like Kenny G bashing (which may be fun and reasonable, but not appropriate to do in Wikipedia). Also, note Wikipedia's strict policies regarding statements about living people. Metheny has been highly critical of instrumental pop saxophonist Kenny G. A detailed analysis of Kenny G's playing and approach was offered by Metheny on his Web site in 2000, archived on Jazz Oasis.com [3]. Drawing Metheny's extreme ire was Kenny G's overdubbing of a song by legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Metheny stated, "By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about" - the full Q & A contains far more explicit commentary.

The statement has received support by other musicians. English guitarist Richard Thompson responded to Metheny's comment's by writing the song, "I Agree With Pat Metheny, Kenny's Talents Are Too Teeny."[4] Also, a trio of improvisational American musicians, have toured numerous times by the "punk jazz" moniker, "The Dead Kenny G's."

This can all stay out. It reads somewhat like a gossip column. It is unlikely that he intended for his original statements to become so widely read. What might work however is a brief generalized mention of all of his literary work (be it blog) in the biography section. Also, a gentle (with a capital G) mention of controvery, or criticism by improvisatioanl artists towards Kenny G's Armstrong "duet" may be appropriate on the Kenny G article. - Steve3849 talk 21:22, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
