Operation Dawn 2 (also known as Operation Valfajr-2) was an Iranian operation during the eight year long Iran-Iraq War. This operation opened a new front in northern Iraq/Iraqi Kurdistan also known as "the northern front". Despite Turkish help this region was Iraq's weak point during the war as the Kurds sided with Iran.[1]

[edit] The Battle

Iranian forces advanced and where highly successful, they managed to seize Haj Omran and win the ground fight. Iraq responded with a poison gas attack, this was the first use of chemical weapons in the entire war. The Iraqis hit the Iranian troops on the mountain tops with mustard gas while their troops in the slopes advanced. Unfortunately for the Iraqi assault troops, the Iraqis were unfamiliar with the properties of the heavier-than-air agent and the gas descended the mountain onto the exposed Iraqi troops. This is how their attack failed and Iran won the battle.[1]
