[edit] Route description
It runs through the counties of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Portage, Stark, Carroll and Jefferson.
[edit] Cuyahoga County
Its northern terminus is in Cleveland's Public Square; it diverges from Ontario Avenue with State Route 14 onto Broadway Avenue, and 14 and 43 continue together until they pass through the Slavic Village neighborhood. South of Slavic Village the two routes split with State Route 43 becoming Miles Avenue and State Route 14 continuing along Broadway Avenue, the location where SR 43 shields first appear. State Route 43 crosses from Cleveland through Warrensville Heights and North Randall where it passes under the triangular interchange of Interstates 271 and 480 and U.S. Route 422. On the other side of the triangle, State Route 43 runs along Aurora Road from Bedford Heights into Solon where it intersects with State Route 91 (SOM Center Road) in downtown Solon.
[edit] Geauga County
SR 43 clips the southwestern corner of the county in Bainbridge Township. The road is less than one mile long in Geauga County. The posted direction changes from east-west to the northwest to north-south to the southeast in this small section, as of 2008.
[edit] Portage County
Route 43 crosses into Portage County and Aurora on North Aurora Road as it passes Geauga Lake and the waterpark on its southern shore, Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom. In downtown Aurora, State Route 43 joins Chillicothe Road at its meeting with the southern terminus of State Route 306 turning due south. From Aurora, the route continues south through Streetsboro and into Kent. In Kent, Route 43 is a four to five lane road known as North Mantua Street. Just west of downtown Kent, 43 is divided into two one-way roads, with southbound traffic on North and South Mantua Streets and northbound traffic on Gougler Avenue and River Street. Route 43 turns east at Haymaker Parkway and is briefly co-signed with SR 59 as it crosses the Cuyahoga River, before turning south again at South Water Street, where it passes just west of the campus of Kent State University, which is visible from the bridge over the river. The road continues south, crossing Interstate 76 at exit 33 just south of Kent in Brimfield and U.S. Route 224 in Suffield Township.
[edit] Stark County
In Stark County, State Route 43 passes through Hartville, where it briefly turns east in a co-sign with SR 619 before turning south again and passing through rural portions of the county before entering Plain Township and Canton. In Canton, Route 43 has junctions with US 62, SR 153, SR 172, and US 30 as it runs just east of Interstate 77. From Canton, 43 turns southeast meeting the southern end of SR 44 in rural Sandy Township. Just north of central Waynesburg, the route turns east onto Alliance Road Northeast at the junction with the eastern terminus of SR 183.
[edit] Carroll County
State Route 43 is almost entirely rural in Carroll County, where it runs east-west until just east of the village of Malvern, where it turns south towards Carrollton. In Carrollton, 43 is Canton Road Northwest until it meets SR 39 at West Main Street. It is cosigned with SR 39 on West Main Street and then with both SR 39 and SR 9 on East Main Street as Route 9 joins from North Lisbon Street. The three routes run together until Routes 9 and 43 exit to the southeast onto Steubenville Road. 43 and 9 are co-signed until just west of Harlem Springs, and 43 continues in a general east-southeast direction, passing through Harlem Springs and eventually into neighboring Jefferson County.
[edit] Jefferson County
Jefferson County is the final county that State Route 43 travels through, entering the county in the small village of Amsterdam along Steubenville Road. It passes through the unincorporated town of East Springfield and onto the village of Richmond, where it meets with and is briefly co-signed with SR 152 along the village's East Main Street. Just north of Wintersville, 43 meets US 22. In Wintersville, 43 is known as Canton Road until it joins Main Street and heads east, being called Sunset Boulevard once it enters neighboring Steubenville. In Steubenville, 43 becomes a short divided highway just west of downtown before exiting onto Washington Street and continuing to its southern terminus at SR 7, known and the "Dean Martin Highway," along the Ohio River and the Ohio-West Virginia border across from Weirton, West Virginia.
