Question for anyone: On Google Earth, the city of Nouakchott appears to be getting swallowed by the Sahara desert. How long has that been going on? You can see cars driving around and the airport is active, as if people just ignore the encroaching desert.--Johnreep 02:29, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, for quite some time. There used to be some kind of a Green Belt to protect the city from the dunes, but now it's been built over. It's an extremely rapidly growing city. The alarming part actually is not so much the desert taking over (people are used to that in Mauritania, they just move a little further and build anew), it's more that the Dunes Belt protecting the city from the sea (Nouakchott is below sea level) has been taken away as construction material!--SidiLemine 10:49, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Could anyone provide an indication of the pronunciation of this word (preferably in IPA)? --babbage 04:22, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't know IPA, but recently returned from the city, where people pronounced it
No ack shot
No = opposite of yes
ack = as in acknowledge
shot = as in gunshot
The accent seemed to be on "ack" maybe someone else could write this up as IPA? I'm not from Mauritania, but hope it helps. --Tomhannen 01:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, you would have to choose between the arabic pronunciation or the romanized one. It seems customary to use the romanized one, which in this case would be the French pronunciation: exactly as above, but with the "Nou" pronounced "Noo".--SidiLemine 14:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
