Northern Trust was founded in 1889 in a one-room office in Chicago's Loop, with a focus on providing trust and banking services for the city's prosperous citizens, and has flourished over the years by staying true to its core principles and focusing on its clients' needs. Northern Trust is one of the nation's premier money managers for wealthy individuals, counting over 20% of the U.S.'s wealthiest families as its clients. It is also one of the largest global custodians in the world, serving the asset servicing needs of corporate and public retirement, foundations, endowment, fund managers, insurance companies and government funds. Northern Trust recently expanded its 18-state office presence in the US by opening its 85th office in Wheaton, Illinois. Recent new business wins within its corporate and institutional services business unit include the State of Tennessee's $29.3 billion mandate, the $51 billion Australia Future Fund, a $3 billion Dutch government insurance program, the $11.5 billion New Zealand Superannuation Fund, and the El Paso Fireman and Policemen's Pension Fund.
In 2007, Northern Trust has won numerous awards for its services. Recent awards include being named to Computerworld's list of best places to work in IT, numbers Financial Times Business awards, PLANSPONSOR magazine's "Best in Class" award for transition management, European Pension Fund Custodian of the Year, and Southern Florida CEO Magazine's "Best Private Bank" award. The company also struck a strategic agreement with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust & Bank Corp to provide cross-border estate administration services.
