[edit] Collusion with InterWiki
If the searched text is a valid format InterWiki link, the mapping will be expanded, and the "Create this article" link will take you to edit the page on the target site.
This is not really a problem -- except when the other site also runs MediaWiki.

- Nice feature. Why a problem?--Patrick 01:13, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
-
- Nothing warns you that it is taking you to another site.
- I suppose it might be detectable from a change in the site design, but generally all MediaWikis use the same default stylesheet, and there isn't necessarily anything else very distinguishing.
- On top of it all, it makes the "No such article by this name" potentially incorrect -- taking you to the edit page for an existing page on another site. - Keith D. Tyler ¶ [AMA] 07:30, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)
- Actually to the view page, regardless of existence. Yes, for this case the text is wrong, and also class='new' should be class='extiw'. A link [[entered text]] would be better, but I do not know how to change this, $1 seems to be the URL. Fortunately, it is unlikely that you search for something like "nl:trein" without intention to go to the other wiki. Thus it is a feature for insiders, harmless for others.--Patrick 09:14, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Should be default configuration
It's hard to imagine why this isn't part of a default configuration. When I installed my Wiki there was no apparent way to create a new article and any others that I'd used always had this feature. I suppose this is an issue for those who maintain the source code.
- I kind of feel the same way, but perhaps admins of other sites don't want to encourage creation of nonexistent links. I dunno. Still, the desire for this forces you to delve into the workings of MediaWiki and figure out what you need to do to make this work. :) OTOH, it would be nice to at least have this documented so that those who want the feature can find it a bit more easily. - Keith D. [edit] Wikitext not HTML
It should be noted that the example references uses HTML - this did not work for me on 2.20 until I changed it to a Wiki reference.
[edit] Suggested addition to help new users
Taken from WikiEn-l:
People often ask at WP:HD and elsewhere about what happened to the articles and images they created last week. It usually turns out to be one of three things: a speedy deletion, a VfD, or a failure to remember the exact spelling. To mitigate this, I propose that we add (something like) the following:
- If you are looking for an article you created recently, there are a number of possible reasons why it does not appear:
- You created it a few seconds ago, and the indexes have not yet been updated. Please wait ten seconds and try again.
- You did not use the same spelling as you originally created the article under. Note that Wikipedia search is case-sensitive. See our naming conventions for how to title articles. If this is the case, you should be able to find the article by following the "my contributions" link to see your contributions. If your article is misnamed, please consider moving it or asking that it be moved. If the subject of your article has several possible titles, consider creating redirect pages.
- The article was deleted, either speedily or after a 7 day vote. To see if this is the case, try <a href="../../../../articles/l/o/g/Special%7ELog_01d8.html">searching for this page in the deletion log</a>. If there was a vote, then there should be an archive of that vote here. If your page has been deleted, please do not simply recreate the page. Instead, propose a vote for undeletion.
- If you are looking for a simple dictionary definition, consider looking in Wiktionary (see box).
Bovlb 15:55:09, 2005-07-18 (UTC) Wiktionary added Bovlb 15:17:39, 2005-07-23 (UTC)
- Why not? Sounds good to me. JesseW 02:03, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- So what now? No-one's objected in the three weeks my suggestion has been here. Does some admin want to be bold and implement it? Bovlb 04:32:07, 2005-08-09 (UTC)
[edit] Unable to Edit Nogomatch
I've followed the instructions listed here but am unable to edit the Nogomatch page with anything. It gives me a "view sorce" option and that's it. It is my wiki so I should be able to edit anything, right? The documentation seems lacking in this area. Here's my page http://www.quixtarwiki.com/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Nogomatch
I'm running version 1.4.5
- Maybe you were logged in as The Mule instead of Themule. Only the latter is sysop.--Patrick 23:04, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
- That was it Patrick. Thanks for your help. I am appropriately embarrassed -- The Mule
[edit] Is there any "Nosearchmatch"?
One still can not start a new page by search a non-existing term.
How does wikipedia enable "You searched for xxxx [Index]" option in "Go" or "Search" result page while MediaWiki doesn't provide it by default? -- Ghayek 09:34, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] toolbar problems
The new toolbar isn't working correctly for articles with spaces or underscores in the title, e.g. list of places in Misouri and list_of_places_in_Misouri:
- Index and What links here: no problem
- Watch: This is displayed as "of places in Misouri&action=watch watch" and links to :list
- Unwatch: as for watch
- deletion log: links to "Special:Log&type=delete&user=&page=:List" and is displayed as "of places in Misouri deletion log"
The problem is that $1 doesn't convert spaces to underscores, and the first space in an external link is treated as the break between url and description. I've removed the non-working items for now, but they'll be useful if we can get them working. Thryduulf 21:00, 16 January 2006 (UTC) Thryduulf 21:00, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
- Try
{{fullurle:$1|action=watch}}etc. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 02:16, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
-
- Unfortunately neither that, nor several variations on it work. Thryduulf 22:07, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ugly message
This message looks a real mess right now. We have 3 font sizes, 4 levels of indent, a tatty-looking table, and cryptic "Tools" links that won't mean much to non-editors. It needs a little tidying up is all...
No page with that title exists.
You can [[:$1|create this article]] or request it. Please search Wikipedia before creating an article to avoid duplicating an existing one, which may have a different name or spelling.
Thoughts? sjorford (talk) 12:28, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
- Looks good. Thryduulf 21:45, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Index in tools
The index thing is not needed... There is already a link for it. --AllyUnion (talk) 06:24, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Remove the ":" before the $1
The ":" before the $1 should be removed, as it is now duplicated – the ":" are already passed in $1. – rotemliss – Talk 13:08, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Moving...
As part of some improvements to making the language files et al. not suck, this message has been renamed and altered a little in version control, so when the site is next synchronised, stuff is going to change.
The new message is at MediaWiki:Noexactmatch. The change which needs to be noted is that the "evil colon" is now needed in the message to stop stuff breaking, so if copying this over to there, make sure you whack a colon in front of the $1 in links. robchurch | talk 11:36, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, thank you for the information. --Siva1979Talk to me 22:28, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 1$ bug
Why does the link "create this article" point to the 1US$ article? =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:26, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- It only points there at this MediaWiki page; it works correctly at other places. —Mets501 (talk) 14:31, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] 'Create this article'
This should say 'create this page', because otherwise if someone types in the name of a nonexistent template, etc., into the search box, the link is incorrect and confusing. This would coordinate the link with 'No page with this title exists' in the heading. --ais523 14:23, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
