No. 37 Squadron is a Royal Australian Air Force transport squadron. It was formed in 1943 and currently operates C-130H Hercules and C-130J Hercules aircraft from RAAF Base Richmond.
The Squadron has seen active service flying transport aircraft during World War II and the Vietnam War. It has also supported Australian peacekeeping operations around the world, including in East Timor and Iraq, and flew support operations during the first Gulf War.
The C130E became well known in the Southern Pacific after being called on for relief following many natural disasters including cyclones in Western Samoa and floods throughout Australia. The Australian public also had the experience of flying in the Hercules when they were employed by the Federal Government to provide air transport during the pilots' dispute that curtailed operations by the two domestic airlines in 1989.
No. 37 Squadron was expanded on 17 November 2006 when No. 36 Squadron's C-130H Hercules were transferred to the Squadron.[1] Four of the C-130Hs were retired as part of the transfer, leaving No. 37 Squadron with twelve C-130J and eight C-130H aircraft.[2]
