[edit] Route description
In the west, NY 342 begins at an intersection with NY 12 in Pamelia, just a few miles north of Watertown. Less than a mile later, it has an interchange with Interstate 81. Proceeding just north of due east, it intersects with NY 37 at 1.15 mi (1.85 km). It runs parallel to a country club, and the highway begins to turn east-southeast. An intersection with US 11 is not far off, and NY 342 subsequently passes the Fort Drum Military Reservation. The highway turns south-southwest, intersecting Route 283 along the way. Passing just west of the Black River, NY 342 terminates at NY 3 in Le Ray.[4]
[edit] History
The portion of what is now NY 342 from U.S. Route 11 to Pearl Street (modern NY 283) was originally designated as part of a rerouted NY 26 ca. 1961. Past Pearl Street, NY 26 followed Le Ray Street and South Main Street to Black River, where it joined NY 3 eastward toward Deferiet.[5][6] Later in the decade, the segment of NY 26 between US 11 and NY 3 was included as part of NY 342, a new route extending from NY 12 in Pamelia to NY 3 in Black River.[2][3] By 1974, NY 26 and NY 342 were rerouted in the vicinity of Black River to follow the current routing of NY 342 west of the village. The overlap with NY 26 was eliminated in the mid-1970s when NY 26 was truncated to Carthage.[7][8]
