Neville Lovett

Ernest Neville Lovett (February 16, 1869 to 1951) served as Bishop of Portsmouth from 1927 to 1936 and as Bishop of Salisbury from 1936 to 1946.

He was ordained in 1892, and served as priest at Clifton, Wymynswold in Kent (now called Womenswold see http://www.eastbridgedeanery.org.uk/Wymynswold/index.htm), Bishop's Caundle in Dorset and Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. He was Rector of Farnham, Surrey from 1908 to 1912.

In 1912 he wrote an Historical Pageant The passing of the Bailiff: a play of Georgian Farnham: recalling certain incidents there in the year 1793 (circa) and the people who took part therein. This was successfully performed [1] and the text published.

His appointment as Bishop of Portsmouth was recorded in The Times May 25, 1927 (This article gives a history of his previous appointments. His birth date is given as February 16, 1869. He was 58 at the time of the appointment).

In May 1936, he was appointed Bishop of Salisbury (Times May 18, 1936). He announced that he would resign on April 30, 1946 in May, 1945 (Times May 26, 1945). He died September 8, 1951. His obituary appears in The Times September 10, 1951.

There is a school in Fareham, Hampshire called the Neville Lovett Community School The website says: "The new school was named after Neville Lovett who became the first bishop of Portsmouth in 1927, the same year in which the diocese was created and the new cathedral consecrated." There is another Bishop Lovett School at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

He married Evelyn Block. They had five daughters. She died in 1937.
