allopurinol is a drug that is used to treat gout, and does so by inhibiting xanthine oxidase. this stops the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine, and then again, from xanthine to uric acid. it is uric acid that is not solube in water, and cystallizes in the joints and kidney tubules, NOT XANTHINE.
