NBA All-Defensive Team

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NBA All-Defensive Team is the NBA's annual honor given to the best defensive players in the NBA during the regular season. The team was first selected following the 1968-69 NBA season.[1] The voting is done by the 30 NBA head coaches; the coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own team.[2] The team is composed of two five-man teams, a first and second team, comprising 10 roster spots. Players receive 2 points for a first-team vote and 1 point for a second-team vote. The top 5 vote-getters make the first team with the next 5 making the second team. In the case of a tie at the 5th position of either team the roster is extended. If the first team consists of 6 players due to a tie the second team will consist of at least 5 players with the potential for more in the event of additional ties. This has occurred several times, most recently in 2005-06 when Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd tied in votes leading there to be 6 players on the first team and 5 on the second for a total of 11. No respect is given to position. For example, in 2005-06 the second team had three forwards, one center, and one guard.[2]
