Would like to know why this town is called 'Narbeth' in English, but 'Arbeth' in Welsh... something to do with "North Arbeth" or somesuch? --Leperous 01:21, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Doubt it. The Welsh yn Arberth ("in Arberth") was probably mis-analysed by English speakers as i' Narberth. The same process gives us 'nuncle' (from 'mine uncle' → 'my nuncle') in some English dialects, just as the reverse process gives us standard English 'adder' ('a nadder' → 'an adder'). It's a common mix-up. Q·L·1968 19:37, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
