Nagarkurnool is a town in Mahbubnagar district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the business and education centre for the surrounding villages and towns. Nagarkurnool is located in between 16.48 degrees northern longitude and 78.32 eastern latitude, this town is situated approximately 458.0 m above sea level. Nagarkurnool falls under semi-arid tropical regions.
Once it was the district headquarters, now it is an MP constituency and Revenue division.
Nagarkurnool was named after the Kings "Nagana" and "Kandana", the brothers who ruled the present Nagarkurnool and surrounding area. The village Naganool (which was named after "Nagana") is still existing, approximately 1 km south east of Nagarkurnool.
Between 100–200 years ago, Nagarkurnool was a main junction for transport. Farmers traveling this area would buy and apply kandena to their carts. Kandena is a greasy material applied to cart wheels to run smoothly. The name Kandanool (Ooru), which sells kandena, eventually became Kurnool (Chinna Kurnool) and then Nagarkurnool.
More than 70% of people still build upon their lives on farming, the main crops areCastor,Jowar,Rice,Maize..etc, to develop agriculture in this area Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has established RARS Regional Agricultural Research Station in Palem village, in this station research activities are focussed on Bjra, Jowar, Castor crops.
Population is approximately 45,000, which includes surrounding hamlets Uyyalawada, Palem, Naganool, Endabetla and Sripur. Nagarkurnool is popularly abbreviated as NKL or NGKL.
Nagarkurnool is a major grampanchayat. It is the second fully computerised panchayat office in Andhra Pradesh. Elections are held every 4 years to elect the Sarpanch.
The present Member of Legislative assembly of Nagarkurnool is Dr. Janardhan Reddy Nagam.
As of 2001 India census[1], Nagarkurnool had a population of 26,176. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%, as the people from many surrounding villages continuously migrating to Nagarkurnool for education and job opportunities the population is increasing day by day. Nagarkurnool has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 62%. In Nagarkurnool, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

[edit] Temples or places of worship
- Ramaswamy Temple—one of the oldest temples in the locality. A newly built TTD Kalyana mantapam is also on the premises of this well known temple. Famous for the Rama Navami and Krishnashtami festival celebrations. During the Sri Rama Navami festival the wedding ceremony of Lord Sri Rama and Seetha are performed every year.
- Hanuman Temple—located near the Nagar Kurnool Cheruvu (Man Made Lake). This is one of the ancient temples of the town.
- Saibaba Temple—renovated in 2003, inaugurated by Bhagwan Sri Sathya Saibaba of Puttaparthy himself. Members of Nagar Kurnool Sathya Sai Seva Samithi are highly devoted and actively involved in many social service activities, such as empowering rural women in handicrafts, providing tools and vocational training to unemployed youth, conducting medical camps for the poor and needy in and around the town, training in hygiene, adopting and maintaining cleanliness in villages, etc.
- Shivalayam—located opposite Main Post office.
- Kanyaka Parameswari Temple—Elegant Temple dedicated to Lordess Kanyaka Parameshwari and Lord Shiva. This temple is built by Arya Vysya community.
- Subramanya Swami Temple—located in Erragadda.
- Santoshi Maatha Place of Worship—located in Santha Bazar in Sri Sambu Ramesh residence. Hindu women celebrate Santoshi Maatha prayers on Fridays.
- Bala Yesu Mandiram—located in the premises of Little Flower High School and operated by a Christian organisation.
- Pedda Mosque—mosque located in Santha Bazar main road.
- Ayappa temple—located behind housing board colony. This is a newly-built temple.

[edit] How to go Nagarkurnool
- Nagarkurnool is about 112 km from Hyderabad, so this is easily accessible by road, there are two main road ways to reach, one is through Srisailam highway via Kalwakurthy (80 km) then Medipur road (32 km), another is through NH-7 until Jadcherla (79 km), then Nagarkurnool Road (39 km).
- Nagarkurnool is just 86 km from the new Shamshabad International airportlink title.
