Veterans who have retired from the Armed Forces for a variety of reasons after seving in various roles assigned to them for national independence formed Veterans's Organizations in their local areas since 1948. Those organizations were properly organized in 1973 and the Constitution of the Veterans' Organization and fundamental Rules were adopted in 1975. Necessary amendments to the Constitution and the Fundamental Rules were made in 1976, 1982 and 1986. After the Tatmadaw was compelled to assume the duties of the State in 1988, the State Law and Order Restoration Council promulgated the Myanmar Veterans' Law and the Rules Relating to the Law with Legislation No. 17/18 on August 1989 and the Myanmar Veterans' Organization was re-organized. But due to weaknesses in implementing its mission, the State Peace and Development Council reorganized the Cental Organizing Committee with 30 members under Order No.3/89 on 21 October 1998. A further reorgazied with 42 was carried out under Order NO.24/2005 on March 2005 on 15 March 2005. Currently the Myanmar Veterans' Organization operates under the supervision of Cental Organization Committee Memgers and has 19 States/Divisions Veterans' Supervisory Committees. As of March 2007 membership strength is over 170000 with 89775 members and 79519 auxiliary members.
